What a complete waste of time that is.
I went yesterday.
blood pressure check, (and pulse).
Cholesterol check.
weight check.
Thats it.

I was asked how much I alcohol I drunk, (to much)
How tall I was. (didn't check).
And did I think I had a good diet. (didn't ask what it was).

what a waste of NHS time and funds.

Raised blood pressure - detect and treat to prevent many future cardiovascular diseases
Cholesterol check, ditto for the above
Weight and height check - raised BMI is linked to many health problems
Alcohol missuse- also needs tackling

The trouble is that it *wasn't free*, you paid for it, but because it was free you valued it as worthless.

Health screening is vital and prevents future disease.

How are we to know that you aren't an overweight, hypertensive alcoholic, with raised cholesterol, who may die 15 years prematurely. It is cheaper to screen now than treat later.

Try paying $300+/month for healthcare like the rest of the world, see if you begrudge basic health screening then.

Is this the over 40 health check or something else? As I imagined any recommended health check like the mid life one would be much more comprehensive, for example blood tests and so on.

Seems very basic.

The issue is that the experience of going through this health check leads me (& the OP) to believe that it's just an excercise in the practice hitting it's targets & getting a payout. Is it the case or not that practices are paid based on meeting targets for items such as these health checks & getting patients on to statins?

When I had this check the nurse had neither scales or a tape measure so she had to rely on me for this data. It's ridiculous to belive that a meaningful health assessment would use patient supplied data like this & be unable to confirm the accuracy of it. It's just box ticking.

Cholesterol check is a blood check isn't it?

I had slightly raised blood sugar, referred me for a proper blood test and then discovered I have diabetes (I have no symptoms).

So for me it was good.

Good news!
Has it been caught early? What's your diet like?

Yes the over 40s health check.
The blood test was Cholesterol only, no diabetes or cancer check.
So no blood sugar check.
The diet question was simply my opinion of my diet, if I'd had thought Big Macs were healthy then I had a good diet.
My height wasn't checked.
And at no point was I asked if I thought I had anything wrong with me.
I guess I was expecting a bit more than blood pressure and a pin prick.

There is another thread that I contributed to (about Diabetes). I had a terrible life style as I travel quite a lot for work. I was diagnosed a couple of months ago, did not want to go on medication so I immediately cut out all carbs, all beer and have dropped 12kg. I monitor my blood sugar daily and after meals and it is more or less on track with very few spikes. Probably need to loose another 5kg-8kg to be my ideal weight.

The cholesterol one does both, and then there is another in the NHS check if the first detects higher blood sugar. If that is not good (as in my case) then you are referred to the doctor for a proper fasting blood test.

It should be made clear that you will be asked questions about your diet so to keep a diary for a week or so prior.

When asked what my diet is like and how much I drink I just can't tell you with any accuracy off the top of my head yet the nurse will essentially force you to make something up!

It's a good idea in principle though. And they won't do a full blood count unless you actually have some signs/symptoms. amongst other reason being you run the risk of being a exposed to VOMIT.
Victim Of Medical Imaging and Testing.

Many Imaging results and blood results come back with findings but in many cases they are incidental.

I was expecting that when the letter arrived but had been assured it was done by a blood test now.
I just assumed it would be a bit more thorough.
