Louder Griffith!
Discussion
This has probably being asked loads of times before but I can't search at the mo....
As much as I'm loving my Grif, after hearing some of the Tiv's at the last mid essex meet I've decided that it needs to be louder!
I've heard it mentioned before that you can remove the cat's, but I was thinking of fitting a replacement exhaust system and was after some recommendations....
cheers!

If you want a replacement exhaust, take a look here --> www.actproducts.co.uk/silencing.php
You can decat, but personally I couldn't be bothered with the (potential for) hassle at MOT time.
Other options are to remove the pre-cats, or what most people do is sleeve the silencer box. It's not a particularly elegant solution (and I've seen plenty with dodgy welds and some that are bowing) but it's cheap and sounds nice.

I may be the first of many to recommend having the exhaust sleeved for a cheap alternative to a replacement system. Its what a lot of people have had done and subsequently call a 'sports exhaust'. From what I understand it involves having the rear box cut open and all the crap inside removed, then having the perforated pipes that run though it sleeved with solid tubes and then all welded back up.
I've had this done on mine and it is much louder, with a harsher, more aggresive sound if that makes sense! Sets off car alarms but also makes me too loud for most track days so worth remembering if that's your thing. Cost varies but can potentially be done quite cheap, maybe £100-£150.
You know it makes sense!

Yeah, gotta admit that's kinda what put me off....
So looking at the ACT exhausts, if I just replaced the exhaust and not the manifolds would it make much difference?
sorry, as you can tell I'm not exactly a car techie.....

Sounds good, but would this then make it a hassle for MOT's etc as mentioned by podie? If not then it does sound like my kinda solution, where can I get it done?

This what I've had done to mine - much louder but still not like my old 4l precat. My wife thought the precat was too loud and liked the muted tone of the 500 - until I got the exhaust seen too - she now thinks this is also too loud - a positive vote me thinks!
Dave Batty did mine (in Guildford)

Removing the cats can cause a headache at MOT time... not known any issues with a sleeved exhaust.
Angus - Yeah but I'm getting mine back today - so there...
I can check that he's sorting yours out when I'm over there this pm
Is that the LW Cerb from AB? Saw that the other day very nice.....mind you the roof didn't want to come off despite pulling it really hard!!
Grif500 - Its in for a knackered starter motor - fried by my new battery - wear and tear I guess. But it has to go back in a couple of weeks for the rear screen to be replaced as some of the stitching has started to come away - I better see if I can get some money off for putting some business his way...!

Podie meant hassle regarding emissions I should think not from noise.
My S has a complete (single box) straight through system and was extremely loud and it passed the MOT like this. The only reason a tester can fail you is if the exhaust is defective and leaking.
Unfortunately, I was tailed by BiB with the exhaust that loud and had to pootle along at a very gentle throttle until he got bored and drove off but I could see this happening often so I fitted reduction sleeves inside the tail pipes (available from Demon Tweeks) and these are very effective but the car still sounds rather nice. Cost was about £25.

Well, that was easy!
Just spoke to him, cars booked in for the 17th May, woo hoo, can't wait!![]()
Thanks for info and advice all,
Whats yours in for Paul, nothing serious I hope..?
Been to David Batty before and a top bloke he is too. He was busy at the time so Fernhurts did my exhaust. Very happy with it and it pops/bangs like crazy. Great fun in multi storey car parks!

No not AB's LW.Its a James Agger special but right now it has no clutch or bell housing - so if you get the chance - catch a rare look inside the guts of an AJP V8
Please tell him I send him my best wishes - he's a great guy.
Good luck with the Griff

Probaly been said before, but I couldn't be bothered to read the whole post....
Just fitting a sports silencer to a standard system makes surprisingly little difference. If you have the silencer doctored (emptied out / sleeved) it will sound really nice and be a lot cheaper. The MOT test says that the exhaust system must be complete without holes and not be excessively loud. That is in the eye (ear) of the beholder, so you shouldn't have any problems.
You can remove the precats, which will not affect your emissions.
