Continuing from https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

My budget has been upped to £10,000 now

I have looked at the 1 series from 2013 and they look great, both inside and outside, decent power too at 188bhp.

I know there's a lot of hate around the 4 cans but what else can YOU recommend me in this price range that is both sporty and techy / looking great inside and outside.

Nothing wrong with a 120d,

If you do enough miles to justify having a derv, I'd say you can't go wrong. My sister has one and they're a good steer with enough power to make progress.

What a difference 2 days makes.. does it really require a new topic to be started though?

I mean, most people don't like looking at old threads on topics they might not know. I am genuinely interested in people who own these and their opinion, hence the title.

If mods think it's not acceptable, then my bad

How many miles do you do per annum, roughly?

Not more than 8000 ( weekend cruiser and occasional roadtrip around the UK like once or twice a year )

8k miles per year will not do a diesel engine or yourself (financially) any good.

If I were doing that sort of millage, i'd be looking at a petrol.

Just my opnion, crack-on and do what you want!

Diesels are to save money. Doing any less than 15k miles per annum won't give you a significant saving over a petrol model. Seriously, the savings are absolutely minimal. Why would would WANT a diesel other than that?

Get the equivalent petrol model. As per your previous thread, get a 2.0 TSI Scirocco, IMO. I do the same amount miles as you in the same car. They're actually quite frugal on the whole, with enough grunt to keep things interesting.

If you like the look of the 120d but don't do the mileage then the 118i is a cracking little car.

Mazda 3? At this pricepoint, I would have thought that you'd only be able to get a very basic 120d but you can have an almost loaded (bar leather, electric seats) Sport Nav model: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Had a 120d 2012 model from new for 3 years.

Nice car, great economy 60 mpg and reasonably quick.

Down sides were that is a bit cramped inside for the family, quite noisy though that could have been the run flats.

Main issue with it though was that it was a bit ‘meh’. It was first BMW and frankly it was a bit boring, my last 2 cars have been a Fiesta ST and a Leon 300.

Get a golf. Nothing about the 1 series apart from maybe being a little bit better of a steer makes it a better car over the cheaper golf. More cramped in the back, horrifically hard suspension (worst I have ever experienced), worse boot, worse standard spec etc etc
