Searching threads on here, it seems all I have to do is pull but how hard?

They've been getting very slow so I want to spruce up the wiper motor.

I've a '96 car so the wiper motor is under the bonnet. Got the connector off (that was a task, due to corrosion) and undone the brass nut but when I pull the motor, the wipers start to move. Do I just pull harder or is there an issue here?

Remove the wipers and try again, your pulling the screw type drive out of the tube and it will try and drive the wheel boxes/wipers.

The wheelboxes could be tight due to lack of lubrication, once you've removed the wiper arms you may get the rack out easier by partially refitting them at a different angle to the screen and use them as levers to turn the wheelboxes which in turn will push the rack out of the tubes, it's extremely difficult to pull on the rack to get it out if its dry and stiff or if the wheelboxes are tight
Don't forget to mark the position of the wheelboxes as you will then be able to rotate them 180 degrees so as to be using the new unused part of their gears when building it all back up

Thanks all. Removing the wiper arms, the worm drive came out OK. Pretty gunged up though.

Motor very clean inside surprisingly for over 21 yrs old so cleaning up the connection spades and regreasing the worm drive should have it going better. thumbup

Wipers were working but were very slow until the screen was quite wet.

I undo the 2 small bolts (7mm heads) on the end cover first. Then prise off the cover. Holding the armature in place I pull the outer casing off the unit. You need to pull hard as the magnets are quite strong. Then I unscrew the armature out of the gearbox casing. This stops the cable or wipers from moving. wink

I’ve just ordered the upgraded motor following on from the recent jaguar xj6 motor thread.
It’s expensive but the wipers are one of my pet hates so money well spent in my opinion.
Supposed to be a massive improvement.

I can add some later but once you remove the existing motor you need to remove a clip and bush shown below from the gearbox housing.
The new motor has an aluminium housing that bolts to the gearbox first, then new motor to this.
The aluminium housing has no bolts provided to mount it to the existing gearbox, i had to use some M5 bolts i had.
Not as straightforward as the description Tvr parts says.

The motor I was sent had the requisite bolts to attach to the gearbox, but otherwise agreed the fitting takes a bit of working out as they don't provide any fitting instructions. Unfortunately I didn take any photos, must get into the habit

I bought a set of wiper motor brushes as described here in the end:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lucas-14W-27W-29W-Wiper...

Auto Electrical Spares have their own site so I collected and saved on postage because I was passing. I changed the ferrule as well because the thread was quite damaged. I think it had been apart before. They do all the bits you need:

http://www.autoelectricalspares.co.uk/wiper-motors...

At first, it seemed no better, but I left it running for a couple of minutes with the wiper arms up and the brushes bedded in OK. Will now work on a dry screen. smile

Still not that good though so I can understand why people would replace the motor.
