Hi All,

Looking for some advice or thoughts..

I have a 2011 V8 Vantage S, 15k Miles that's in great condition but has developed a rattle that's taking the shine off it for me.

It appears to be the flaps within the exhaust rattling, it's fairly dominate at speeds under 30mph / 3-4k revs. I took it to my local dealer and they said "this is fairly common - it's not an issue and the only thing you can do is replace the backbox for around £3-4k".

has anyone else had something similar and if so what's your story?

Many thanks!

From the engine speeds quoted the valves are trying to close and divert exhaust gas through the muffler (the valves are by default sprung open). An easy check would be to see if you can move the valves by hand to check they have full movement. Is one side louder than the other? In neutral they begin to close at 2200rpm? The louder side would indicate the issue is with that sides valve.

When I first picked up my V12V S both valves were stuck open. A bit of penetrating oil and judicious use of pipe grips freed them up.

Liberally!!
You should be able to see/feel round the side of the muffler where the valve and linkage are. Sounds like the drivers one isn’t shutting fully. Hopefully penetrating oil and wiggling it shut and open should sort it out.

There are a few instances where there is welding splatter inside the exhaust from manufacture preventing the valve from fully closing.

I had a look from the back, in to the exhaust and from underneath - I could see or feel the flaps.
any words of wisdom? shy of spraying stuff in the exhaust? :P

It'll be in a similar position, they can be hard to see when you're not sure what to look for

Hi, is there some updates on the original problem? I might have the same one.

Well other than what’s already been said, if you can’t find the valves, you may have an aftermarket rear silencer without valves on it and if that rattled then it may be poor fit...

I haven't looked yet, but I wanted to know from the original poster if meanwhile maybe in the end it was something else. I have the original N420 exhaust.

Just pull fuse 15 and have the valves open all the time.
