Cataract - Any real life experiences or advice?
Discussion
My dad has had both eyes done. Says it is the nearest thing to a miracle he’s ever experienced and he wishes he hadn’t put it off.
NHS in Sheffield. First one I dropped him off and had planned to go to a cafe I know near the hospital for a bit until he was done. Had only just got parked when he was ringing me to come and get him. Second one he said he would be ok on the bus! He was.

I dont want to put a dampener on all the positive comments. However my wife had one of her eyes 'done' over three years ago and for various reasons the op went wrong. It seems that not all of the cataract was removed,it grew again and became infected. She has been left with poor sight, worse than before. In order to correct it she has had to have bi monthly injections direct into the eyeball. This gives relief from the pain but she still has a spongy feeling of fluid pressing on her eye. She has been advised that it probably won't get any better and whilst she has been told its ok to drive she has now lost her confidence.Like all operations there are significant risks of things going wrong.

Ask about flexible lenses, only available privately I think but as I understand it they allow your eyes to still adjust focus 'manually' and not need reading glasses. My Dad's just had both eyes done and at 72 his vision's now better than mine
Be aware. As I understand it the flexible lenses can cause ‘rings’ when exposed to light at night, so not so good for night driving.A colleague had both his eyes done with non-flex lenses in such a way that one eye’s lense was ‘tuned’ for reading and the other eye’s lense was ‘tuned’ for distance. Thus he could dispense with glasses. Unfortunately without glasses he lost that ‘magisterial’ look, and he was a JP.
Quick update
Surgery carried out yesterday, admitted to hospital; at 1.00PM and kicked out at 4.30pm, the actual op took just over 15 mins.
Painless, I must admit I was worried, I should not have been.
My sight in the eye has improved considerably, I need to wait 6 weeks before I get new specs though, so that is curtailing me a bit. Luckily I work a lot from home though, so should be able to get back to work, (The biggest issue was I couldnt read my emails, and working in IT I obviously need to be careful!
. )
Eye drops for 4 weeks, then follow up check and that should be it!
Apparently the reason this has happened so quickly (Over maybe 6 weeks?) is because being type 2 Diabetic, and trying hard to lose a little wight the blood sugar level goes a bit silly! I had no idea.

My mums having this done on Tuesdays
She’s represented England in the olympics for moaning, and if anything can make her complain. She will
Victoria meldrew.
I will keep you posted.
She lost a bit of vision in one eye and the other one has cataracts.
So I’m quite interested to see how she gets on

Blimey, 15 mins that's good! I had my right eye done ( had a few surgeries on it to be fair) but was caused by getting poked in the eye as a teen etc etc.
My first one came loose when I got my head on an engine crane, they tried to hold it with a stitch but it was done wrong and it gave hideous ghosting of street lights etc at night. I had it removed then the fantastic docs at QV in East Grinstead did it a second time with a specially made lens (stigmatism) which has been great ( other than when I rolled over in bed and burst my eye a week or so after the op!) The sights not perfect but with glasses corrects to better than 20/20.

Moaned like hell about everything.
Doesn’t look to bad but it’ll be a month before it’s fully working again
