I'm guessing this isn't against the law, but probably just introducing more risk to their daily drive than is needed.

Today driving along a 40mph A road (this speed is often exceeded by traffic) a couple of cars in front of me a police car and then one ahead of them a car that slows down and stops to allow a car on the opposite side of the carriageway to turn across it in to a side turning. The car crossing isn't even expecting this and there is the usual delay of should I shouldn't I. After a fair while of all cars stationary the car crosses and the car that stopped continues on its way, not turning off the road.

Now I usually beep in this instance because if I am behind I am now exposed to the potential of a 40+mph rear impact from someone who decided to check their mobile phone for "one second".

The police officer did nothing... I appreciate they probably had somewhere better to be/do, but doesn't this kind of daftness deserve a talking to?

I get annoyed when it happens and think people are misguided for doing it, thinking they are being nice when in fact they are just causing a hazard. Maybe I should get back in my box.

I wouldn't, but I wouldn't take umbrage with someone who did. I might back off and let someone cross if i didn't have to come to a halt. I do make exception for cyclists and let them across whenever possible to reduce their exposure to danger sat in the middle of the road.

agree with you OP - I think that's hugely dangerous.

Even worse when on the bike, as the rear ending would be fatal. So you want to keep going and the car being 'let across' could easily go at exactly the wrong moment and mean a side impact or a clip off.

The person stopping is a fking retard in my view.

I can see that it's a conscientious thing to do allowing soft and squishy to get out of harms way quickly.

Is that sensible though? What if some teenage lad behind you doesn't understand and overtakes (I think back to when I was 17 and I probably did this) in to said cyclist (luckily I never did this) or does check his phone and tw@ts in to the back of you.

I don't know it just doesn't sit quite right with me.

I'd not thought of this, but it must be a pretty tense moment for a bike to be at the back of a queue on a fast road, I dare say eyes glued to mirrors.

genuinely terrifying............I try always to not be the last in queue ever anywhere.

I always try to go a few cars into the queue by way of a filtering moment.

There have been occasions when i'm around a blind bend, and have to stop. I literally am in the mirrors ready to eject if someone comes around too quickly.

I don't know if it's true but in yesterday's thread on this subject someone said it's illegal to do this in the US. I wish it was illegal here too - driving into town in the morning if you get behind one of these 'courteous' drivers they''ll stop at every opportunity to let people across or out.

I did speak to one once when we got to traffic lights and asked him if he realised that every time he did this he was stopping and starting probably 100 cars behind him but I don't think he got the point at all.

In heavy queuing traffic, especially where lanes merge, I am all for taking turns. But if there is any kind of flow, the flow should be maintained.

I'll put my hands up to sometimes judging it wrong though and causing people to think I'm a muppet, genuine best intentions though.

I can beat that. A19 sunderland. Lane 1 peels off onto 1231 and is queued. Retard in lane 2 (which is clear and moving 60 plus) comes to full on stop and puts indicator on waiting for someone to let him in. You have about half a mile to get into lane 1 to peel off but not this guy he drives right up to exit and stops. Lorry behind him has to execute emergency lane change into lane 3. Missus was behind the lorry and can’t see what’s in front and nearly **** herself.
