Transmission Shunt
Discussion
Hello - I'm a newbie to posting on this forum so please forgive any gaffes. I bought a 4.0l 1994 Chimaera about a month ago and am well please so far!
However, it now seems to have developed a fair amount of transmission lash / shunt when coming on / off the throttle. I have checked the diff as per the bible and that seems just within spec as regards play. Have also crawled under - all drive shafts, propshaft and diff mountings seem OK, but when I rock the back wheels whilst under the car, the play sounds like it is in the bellhousing ie somewhere in the region of the clutch. Not sure what this can be - knackered main shaft / gearbox? Gear box is Borg Warner T5 type.
Any suggestions please?

I think everyone will tell you to clean the stepper motor. It sounds like the idle control is erratic which is cured by cleaning the stepper motor as per the bible.
Don't automatically think the worst, things like the prop and gearbox are strongly built and unlikely to give many problems.
You do need to adjust your driving style compared with most (modern) cars. Are you trying to drive at 30 mph in top gear? This can be a real problem in a V8 TVR. Generally you will find 4th gear better at 30mph and only use 5th for 40mph and higher.

I have adjusted my driving style - I now go much faster everywhere! (only when appropriate obviously)Seriously, it doesn't make any difference which gear I'm in although it is worse at lower revs. Stepper motor is on list of things to check but idle speed seems fairly good but I can I can feel / hear play using hands to move rear wheel I'm don't think it's this.
I have had this in the past and it got worse and worse over time.
In my case it turned out to be the bolts holding the Diff to the chassis. Apparently these can work there way loose and even snap off.....which is not good at all.
I was lucky and all 4 were still in place, though 2 were nearly out. They are a bugger to get to due to position and angle for the socket etc. They are a hex fit head, 13 or 14 mm if I recall right.
I just happened to be under the car checking them this last weekend as I don't want them to fall out or break off.
Also gave me a chance to test out the reduced gradient ramps that I built ...just for jobs like this on the TVR.
