Design/build project management stuff

I'm thinking about a bit of a career change next 12 months. My background is chemical R&D with a bent on process engineering, although I'm not a qualified chem engineer - all on the job experience and some post grad courses around the edges.
Recent project has been to install a large lab trial rig (build by third party), the project has involved a fair bit of integration with the building and of course all the safety assessments, hazops etc that go with this sort of thing.
Got me thinking about doing this sort of project management type role full time. What sort of employers would/should I be looking at, and what are these roles like on a full time basis?
I'm not really up for any further exams or qualifications, unless the salaries are going to be staggering. So I think retraining as an architect etc is out. But what about quantity surveryor type roles etc, or even facilities management type stuff - those guys must run big projects like this pretty regularly?
I don't really know anything about this sector so kind of don't know what I don't know...
What do I want, something that has a technical element, keeps me close-ish to the chemical or technology sector, not much line management responsibility (haha!), project manager roles, mobile e.g. not 9-5 5 days sat at a desk but getting out a bit, site visits etc, deliver things that have tangible reward e.g. seeing a building going up, process plant coming to life etc. Salary around £40-50k. Location SE and preferably SW London/Surrey.

What about working for a company like this? It seems they basically travel round distilleries and tell them how to improve their process.
