HI all,

This is my first post on PH Car Buying and i was hoping for some guidance from people in the know.

I'm currently 25 years old, and i am trying to find a decent car with the intention of owning it for 1 year and then getting rid for something better i can afford later in life.

A friend suggested a BMW E46 M3. Its a good option but the insurance would be £1800 for the year.

I was hoping to, please, get any suggestions from car fanatics for a decent car to buy and hold for 1 year, which shouldn't depreciate? Also looking for something with a decent amount of power and noise.

Many thanks,
Charlie

Get the highest spec, best condition, lowest milage mk1 MX-5 you can find. Way off your 15k budget (get 2 or 3?!) give it anything it needs. I've no doubt you'll get more than you paid after a year.

And they're fun so you will enjoy driving it too smile

Mk1 Focus RS or Jag XKR

Don't forget that for any car to hold its value, you can't be putting many miles on it, and must keep the servicing and maintenance up to date.
The reason some of these cars are keeping their value is that the owners are spending plenty of money on maintenace, due to the fact that parts can be difficult to get hold of now.

You need to put hardly any miles on the car & maintain it fastidiously or you could buy a decent car which may lose 1k but you've enjoyed it.

I say get one of these refurb the alloys back to standard, detail clean it use it & tidy up some of the small issues like wheel centre caps remove the random F Badges.

They are quite interesting, but cant quite work out whether they are an expensive IS or a cheaper M/AMG type thing ?

Cant remember what the reviews were like at the time, probably more robust than the German stuff at this age though, or would expect it to be.

And what kind of interest do they get, pay fifteen then cant shift it for 12 after a year, difficult one to value !

These cars have quite the following & they're a very good car, dynamically they're not quite as sharp a the M/RS4 etc but it's not far off, engine wise it's on par with the M3/RS4 as in it's a high revving V8 rather than a torque monster V8 like the C63.

Running cost wise these are quite a (especially when you compare main dealer prices, which is why almost all will have main dealer history) bit more reasonable than the equivalent M/AMG if the OP spent a bit of money on the one above he'd see the money he spent on it.

Maybe he wouldn't see every penny back but he'd see a fair chunk back, the one above will come with a years warranty so any potential issues will be covered.

What you need is to find a car that’s in a bit of a state, needs lots of work doing, and get someone who will do all the work for no money. Someone tall with a grey streak in their hair with a penchant for orange gloves. Then work him like a slave on the car, give him feck all credit, and then sell the car back to the original owner for a tidy tax free profit. If you can do all this while ponsing around like a sweaty overweight knob head you’ll have it sussed.

Some might say this smacks of modern day slavery. But if you look like a bit of a you’ll get away with it.

Really appreciate all the insightful replies guys, so thanks.

At the moment the Lexus ISF is probably top of the list.. anyone fancy beating that and changing my mind for now?
