I am on the verge of being offered a role by a company. They have a £10k salary range between the lowest/highest salary, i.e £X0k - £Y0k. I told the consultant I'd be at the £Y0k as a minimum. In my previous role I was paid £5k higher than their max. offering. I would like to be on the same salary as my previous role.

The company has had a pay freeze in prior years so I may not be able to jump up to what i'd like to be on.

The consultant said the business will not offer me the role unless I accept their higher end.

The company is good however I'm not sure about the potential of career development. I will need to speak to the hiring manager anyway to discuss the potential of development, i.e. what role is next in the organisation.

As you can see I'm quite a novice at this. Any advice will be welcomed.

It depends how much you want the new role.

To take a pay cut, it’d have to offer something more whether that’s a better quality of life / work life balance / something more to be worth it to me.

I have taken an effective pay cut to move roles in the past ( better basic but less of an overall package) but that was to work for a startup with a role that I really enjoy.

If that’s your line in the sand and they don’t meet it, then the decision has been made for you.

Rule of thumb some would say is to only move organisations when there is a 20% improvement in overall remuneration package. This is to compensate for the additional risk of moving.

But your present role pays zero right ?

You are currently not in a job if I read your post correctly.

You need to look at the whole deal, is there a bonus, car allowance, better pension etc - lower commute or any other value. Go through it line by line and try to calculate the gap.

Are you 500 a month worse off or only 150.

To be honest the pay freeze thing would worry me.

So, it was all a bit of a game, the consultants played it well. I managed to up the offer by a few £k despite there not being any scope for an uplift.

They were asking me to accept without having the offer. I got peeved. Told them to get an offer in place first so we could discuss. They kept asking me to accept. Really annoying.
