Looking back at my varying collection of FPS games on steam and on disk from the last 20 odd years for some reason I thought it might make a good topic. What weapons tend to be your go-to choice, and what would be your all-time favourite?

For me I have a tendency to go for shotguns, and probably my all time favourite was from Half Life, closely followed by the Super Shotgun from Quake 2. Something satisfying about firing them, especially unleashing both barrels point blank on some enemy soldier/alien shoot

Anyone else?

The gravity gun in Half Life 2 was amazing fun.

My goto weapon during my 100's of hours playing BF4 was the MK11 MOD 0 DMR, really satisfying to use.

Destiny 1 also had some great weapons, personal favorites were the Mida Multi tool, Plan B and the boss melting pre nurfed Gjallahorn.

Sniper rifle

Far Cry 3,4 and 5. Fallout 3, NV and 4, etc

Quiet and from a distance - not sure what that says about me.

My first thought was the laser ranging grenade launching combination assault/sniper rifle in Soldier of Fortune 2 Double Helix.
Googlesez it was the OICW and that it's mostly hated by people who can't use the laser ranging grenade launcher.
Good times. I'm off to install that and sod the graphics.

Probably The mini nuke launcher in fallout but I didn't get to use it much..

My go to weapon in most FPS's has to Be the rocket launcher.

Same. Silenced 50 cal, shoot em in the head through a wall. Loadiut is always that plus a silenced submachine gun, with a grenade launcher for dealing with incoming reinforcement vehicles.

From the original COD game, the BAR. Stopping power of a rifle for long range shots, and the spray and pray of an SMG for close range.

Good call, I'd forgotten about that. Could be tempted to install it too...

BFG in Doom 1 and 2.

Once you understood how it worked, the tricks to hide the wind up noise, the fact you could kill people in different rooms using "invisible" BFG tricks and so on. Spectacular.

M24 in PubG. If you get away with it from a drop and get a chance to use it at distance, it is a beast.

Halo 2, multiplayer on a home made LAN, circa 2005.

Best weapon for me was the energy sword - so satisfying sneaking up on a camped friend, one brutal hit and all over.

Close call between the G3 in Bad Company 2 and the L85a2 (aka the Laser) in BF3.

Gauss Cannon from Doom 2016. Specifically in siege mode.

I'm also a big fan of the simple, but highly effective, chainsaw to the face.

Twin mini-guns in Timesplitters 1 playing with my friends on the multi-tap was just so much fun. The twin miniguns meant with 4-player split screen most of your little box was just taken up with guns!!

Favourite has to be the Super Shotgun in Doom 2 - BOOM!, click, click, BOOM!, click, click....

Borderlands has some odd ones as I think a lot of the stats are random, so you get submachine guns with huge mags and mammoth rates of fire

To shotguns that swear when you shoot...

The nail gun in Quake!

Not sure what the game's called as I only played a demo, but there's a castle defence game I had a go at on an HTC Vive where you have a bow and arrow and fire it properly, with one controller as the bow and the other as the string. Very good once I got the hang of it.

Loads of the guns from Unreal Tournament have to be in with a shout - Flak Canon, 8-Ball Launcher and instagib shock rifle were all particularly satisfying.

The Lancer from GoW has to be within a shout just because of how iconic it is.

The Intervention from MW2 anyone?

Anti Material Rifle with .50 MG Explosive (GRA) shells from Fallout 3 New Vegas can kill a Deathclaw outright if shot in the head from quite a distance. Also penetrates any NCR armoured outfits.
