With spectacularly unhelpful timing my wife has picked up a speeding ticket the same week we've moved house. The NIP came through to the old address the day before we moved out. As it's a first offence the NIP indicates that she'll be offered a speed awareness course instead of points & a fine. To complicate things her driving licence is in her married name, but her car is still registered in her maiden name. I need to get the contact address on her driving license updated, and also change the registered keepers name and address for her car at the same time as the NIP is going through the system. I'm at a bit of a loss on the order I should do things.

- Do the change of address on the driving license immediately, and return the NIP with the driver stated as being her married name at the new address?
- Return the NIP immediately, wait for that to be processed then do the change of details for the driving license and registered keeper?
- Return the NIP and do the changes of address/registered keeper immediately and hope it all sorts itself out somehow..?

I’d send off licence and v5 for updating.

Then I’d return the NIP with a note informing them of new address etc and stating that just moved and licence and V5 are currently being updated.

The postal redirection will sort it out, right?

So you'll need two redirections, one for each surname.

Don't complicate the NIP with the name change. It's irrelevant.

Yes. The NIP and V5C/licence changes are separate. You won't need the physical licence until the day of the course. Just make sure you have a note of her driver number etc.

The police will be after the name and address of the driver. Get her to supply those. The police and course provider will be able to accept her details and offer the course irrespective of the car registration details.

She simply responds in her married name, the same as the one on her driving licence, use the current address. Do the course. Case closed.

Sort the vehicle registration out separately.

This ^^

Where, or to whom, the car is registered doesn’t matter for the speeding offence, other than in terms of where the police sent the request for the driver’s details.

Thanks everyone, all make sense. Thinking of the NIP as a separate issue to the changes of details makes it all a lot clearer.
