Required Salary on Job Applications
Discussion
I've applied to a couple of jobs lately directly via the company's website. The problem is that there's no salary range for the job, and I have no idea what to put in the "required salary" field. Obviously I know roughly what the role would pay but some companies vary at the top end by about £10k-15k.
If I put a salary that's above the role maximum, are HR likely to just ignore my application based on that alone, or would they proceed with a view to offering less if I was successful?
I don't want to be ignored straight off the bat, but I don't want to give a lower salary expectation either.

All subjective, and I don't think there is just 1 answer to your question.
If they receive lots of qualified applicants within their 'bands', and you are the only higher one, then yes, you may be discounted for going high. That said, if you are the only qualified applicant, or all of the applicants put a higher figure than they were expecting, then they will have to either reconsider.
If there is an option to not fill that box, then I would most likely leave it blank (If I had an applicant that looked great, but had not filled it in, I would still want to interview them). However, you will have the same decision when you are asked in the interview, and may by that time have learnt a bit more about the company and role to decide what you would be happy with.
My advice would depend on how desperate you are to move. If you are testing the market, but generally happy, then by all means try higher. If you really want to move, consider at what price, and bring the number down.
