Hi all,

Posted on here just over a month ago because my Mk6 GTI Golf's timing chain went and was looking for advice on if I should sell.

Unfortunately after many a time waister I have decided that after a month with no car I think I should get it fixed and then either keep it or sell it fixed.

Obviously this will be pricey so I would like some advice. Do people think it is best to get just an engine rebuild from a VW specialist, or should I buy and engine on eBay from a car being broken for spares and get that fitted? Or is the latter too risky?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

I'd look at the cost of both and what guarantees you'd have after it's fitted.

Who's to say the one you buy on eBay won't have any problems?

If it's rebuilt you'll have a car with an engine backed up my a guarantee (for a period).

I would say it would probably be much cheaper to just get a second hand replacement engine and get a garage to fit it.
They can check the chain tensioner in 2 minutes with the new engine out of the car and fit the revised tensioner fairly quickly also if one hasn't already been done.

Thanks guys. Do you know what I should check for if I'm to buy one second hand? I don't really know anything about engines, which makes me think I'm probably not the best person to go and buy one.

Also, this may seem a stupid question. But when you find them online and it says "SUPPLIED & FITTED" does that mean they fit the engine into the car fro you?

I can't imagine it means anything else but you will obviously have to travel to them so may work out rather expensive if you have to get it recovered there.
One that you can get delivered to a local garage will almost certainly be the cheaper option.

Germany offers the best source of 2nd hand engines for VAG cars - just search by your engine code on German eBay and look for one with low miles and some evidence that it's genuine. Decent specialist breakers will ship on a pallet to the UK for little cost, so then it's down to getting someone to fit.
