Having moved + doing more daily miles, is possible the VRS' days are numbered. Eyeing up 1.6 & 2.0 TDI.

Is there a danger I'm making an error getting a used diesel now?
What is the Govt currently charging for road tax, on 5- 8 year old models ?

One arm, one leg and your soul wink

Prime issues will be if you drive into a city. Beyond that, still car dependant IIRC.

Depends on the emissions etc. IIRC an Audi A1 1.6 tdi is £20 ~ £30 per year at the lower end of the tax bands

1) Assuming you're talking about the VAG 1.6TDI, steer clear, it's had numerous issues.
2) The vehicle tax on a 5-8 yo diesel is the same (or only slightly raised) as it was last year, and the year before, and the year before that, etc....

Unless you plan on driving into the centre of London regularly, I doubt the current furore over Diesel will have that much lasting impact in the near-to-mid term. New diesels will get drastically cleaner which can be touted by everyone as a positive step (which it will be), and there are SO MANY 'old' diesel engines about in both private and commercial vehicles that the government will more or less be forced to ignore the problem simply because of the necessary scale of any solution.

If you've done your sums right when choosing petrol vs diesel in the first place then a small increase in tax shouldn't hugely swing it one way of the other.

Would be looking for pre DPF motoring.. sorry birds/flowers. I know too many people that have suffered big bills...
What's the most recent year I can go up to?

Depends entirely. Some cars had DPFs with fluid as far back as 2001/2.

DPF is Euro 5 so 2009.

Personally I think the big fuss about diesel is over nothing, I know the road tax on my (2007 Euro 4) car is still £30 a year.

I will be happy to keep driving a diesel for many years to come.

2006/7 is the cut off for DPFs. My Father in Laws non DPFd Alfa GT is a wonderful thing - remapped, loads of chuff, 50 mpg, the engine will go on forever.

If you're doing the mileage DPF's aren't a really big issue depending on your budget the world's your oyster in terms of options.

We have a 58 plate focus tdci, tax on that is £30 a year. It also does around 50mpg on average. It's very good

Honda’s iCTDI engines are DPF-free, one can pick up Hondas with that engine up to 2008 or so. I pay £150 per year tax for a 2.2 Turbo Diesel Accord.

Mrs T consider a 3 ish year old BMW X1 diesel. Taken my eye off the GOVT's ball - will she get badly hit by road tax?
