Fascinating online chat with Matthew walker, a neuroscientist, on the joe rogan show this week on the importance of sleep and the dangers to both long and short term health of not sleeping enough. Genuinely mind blowing, I don't normally "react" to things but I've decided to try to go to bed an hour earlier from now on (6 hours typical for me most weekdays).

Give it a watch or listen, it'll be on YouTube and podcasts. He also has a book out on it.

Thanks for sharing, I'll have a watch tonight.

I know some of the basic dangers and general downsides; be nice to hear some expert, hopefully in-depth stuff.

Been an insomniac of varying levels for years.

He’s written a book, Evans was raving about it on R2 not so long ago: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Why-We-Sleep-Science-Drea...

It’s on my reading list.

I've been wanting to try this pattern. Just never get around to it.

22pm to 2am - sleep

7am - 20 minute snooze

1pm - 20 minute snooze

7pm - 20 minute snooze.

Would most look forward to the 2am to 5am extra time to do stuff.

I try to have a 20min snooze prior to starting my first night shift of the week on a Monday.

The reality is 20mins spent trying to get to sleep, 20-30mins sleep, 10-15mins lying there as now too tired to get up.

I was chatting to someone about him and his book the other day - who happens to be professionally quallified in the field. His opinion of the book was that while he's a little evangelical about the subject, its all very accurate and in line with modern understanding. It doesn't add all that much on what he says in the interview, so much as give a lot of support to it.

Depends if you're happy to take it at face value or not really, I kind of have and have an extensive reading list waiting...

That said I've been getting to be earlier/ getting up slightly later most days for a 7-7.5 for the last couple weeks and I'm sure I feel better, despite having a few nights with slightly more disturbed sleep, ie waking a few times and lying there rather than the 6 hours but sleep-right-through allways. Seems easier to get up at least.

Just listened to this podcast, quite an eye-opener.
I think most people know they probably don't get enough sleep, but this really was quite a stark warning. I have been it the "6 hours is enough" camp for quite a while, getting max 6 or so hours most nights, with maybe 8 or nine once a week. Having a 2yo who is up at 6am most days sees to that.
But I think I will try to make more of an effort to get to bed earlier from now on.

Interesting point that 2 famous short-sleeper (Thatcher and Reagan) both contracted Alzheimer's.
