I thought there would be a thread on this but it doesn't look like there is one. Is anyone else on PH playing R6 Siege?

I must admit I've only gotten into it recently and I'm not sure why I didn't play it sooner. I remember the reviews when it first came out when people said it would "dead within 6 months" - how wrong they were. I saw it advertised recently with some big discounts on the Xbox Live store and picked up the ultimate edition for half price, which is handy as it means I've got all the DLC operators and all ops and attachments unlocked.

I think as far as competitive MP games this is one of the most hardcore I've played. I love the tight, tactical action and feel that on the whole the game does well to balance the running and gunning aspects with the slower-paced game of chess type stuff. In terms of the gunplay,I think that aspect is absolutely superb, all of the weapons feel so solid and weighty and I like the tactical split with attackers getting assault rifles and the defenders mainly getting SMGs. I'm still not very good with the ACOG though, I recognise the advantage in identifying targets at long range but I find it easier to keep a tight grouping of shots when I'm using the holographic sights.

The real USP of the game is obviously the operators and their gadgets and I think this is where the game really shines. Picking an op and having their gun and gadget guide your playstyle gives the game massive replayability because it always plays out so differently. The meta is huge and there is a lot to learn, with all of the gadgets and their counters between the two teams, the ops who become stronger the longer a round lasts (like Valkyrie or Dokkaebi). It's a steep learning curve and quite unforgiving for new players as you tend to die in an instant and feel like you didn't have a chance to respond, but unlike pure reaction / connection speed shooters you can always use tactics to overcome your disadvantages. Quick reactions definitely help though!

Once you start getting past the initial difficulty hump and become useful to your team the advanced tactics can be quite interesting. One I particularly like is firing an Ash or Hibana breaching round onto a wall, immediately tossing a smoke grenade and then having Glaz nose the new gap with his thermal scope to pick off the defenders as they flap around in panic.

It's not all perfect, which is expected for a Ubisoft title. The instance of putting additional daily rewards in the Uplay system is annoying, especially when the servers go down and you can cash your completed a task and can't cash it in for renown. I'm sure Ubisoft use "number of players using Uplay" as a metric to impress their shareholders, so find a way to make you log into it as often as possible. Hateful, badly coded ste.

So, is anyone else playing this? If so, what operators do you like to use and have you come up with any interesting tactics that might be worth sharing? Ubisoft said earlier this year that they'd support this game for the next 10 years and plan to have 100 operators in the game, with 38 in the game at present and a huge amount of eSports support, the future looks bright for this title.

No, but I loved the much earlier games with the superb tactical elements - felt they lost their way.

As an aside - have you played Arma with a decent bunch?

Yeah. it's definitely best with friends. I have a regular mate who I team up with and we can synergise our strategies together. Two people doing call outs for each is a massive advantage. There are casual and ranked playlists, a lot of ranked players, especially at higher ranks, play with the same full 5 man squad all the time to help them gain consistency.

Playing solo can be a total toss up as to whether your team are any good, whether or not they've got mics or any tactical sense at all. Some people can't even shoot straight, but you're just as likely to end up on a great team playing against the ste players. It's a bit like PUBG with the tension and the fact that if you make a mistake, you'll be dead in an instant. It's very rewarding though as unlike games like COD that have constant respawns, it forces you to develop as a player and get better. It's definitely a game that rewards people who like to learn the meta of a game and really get immersed in the tactics.

How far back?

I've only played these two, on PC and PS3.

Actually the original was the high point for me. Loved planning the operations then seeing how your tactics panned out.

Played a few others but stopped after Vegas.

R6:S is a great game, if a little shallow IMO. I do think that Glaz is a bit OP though - chuck a smoke in and take everyone out with thermal imaging. This is even more galling when they shoot your toenail off and it's game over.

RS:V was probably my favourite. My friends and I lived in fear of 'Spaz Man' - any NPC that had a Spaz 12. They would always miss their first shot, but never their second! If you heard that first shot ring out, run! Buggy as hell that game.

RB6 siege is one game I keep coming back to. I normally dont bother with FPS multiplayer games because they have all seemingly been reduced down to twitch based shooters, but RB6 is different. Its tactical, balanced, slower paced but considerably more intense.
