Hi....new on this forum as just bought a 6 month old demo 520D Touring. A superb car and very pleased with it.

Part of the agreement was for the dealer to supply and fit a new windscreen as the original one had a strange scratch right in driver's sight line which couldn't be polished out. Car is booked in for 1 May to be done.

Asked the dealer if, while the old screen was out, could they fit my own dashcam in, hiding the cable and hard wire in. They declined this by stating that the BMW warranty would be then null and void as they could not guarantee the quality/compatibility etc of my dash cam with the BMW complex wiring system.

Not wishing to lose 30 months of warranty, I rethought my options. The dealer then offered to supply and fit the BMW Advanced Eye dash cam, front and rear cameras for £350. The front camera is a bit chunky so the jury is still out on this. I also understand that there is a Mk2 model about to be launched with a much smaller and discreet front camera. This obviously is the reason for the discounted price but they say that they dont know anything about the Mk2 or when it will be available or the price.

Does anyone on here know anything about the Mk2, the price and when it will be available? I have seen pics on the internet of the new camera and it looks ace but guess the price, when launched will be considerably higher than the current model. Wonder if BMW are holding back the Mk2 launch until the dealers clear their shelves of the Mk1 by discounting the price from the previous levels. I believe the original price was around £550/600, then discounted down to £400 last year and now £350.

Guess I'll carry on for the time being with my old dash cam complete with dangly wire and powered from the ciggie lighter. Not sure how easy it is to route the cabling along the screen surround, down the pillar and around the foot well to the 12v socket and whether or not I would disturb the various light/wiper sensors around the screen.

Any views would be much appreciated.

I’d just make do for a while.

I have a DOD front and rear one and they are flawed. All these things are.

They should use a central processor and then have remote (and small) cameras.

My DOD rear camera is amazing. I was tempted to fit it up front and the big front camera at the back.

I’d say wait for a quality BMW one.

I’ll likely get the new BMW one for our F30 then put the DOD in my Golf.

BMW warranty null & void if you fit a dashcam, seriously????

That’s an awful lot of invalid warranties for owners who fitted several types of after market stuff, phone holders, sat navs and radar/laser detectors to name just a few.

This was NOT the view of BMW warranty ( I contacted them direct) when I asked about a dashcam fitted privately to an approved used car, they said something along the lines of it was fine but they wouldn't cover the dashcam or if the dashcam caused specific problems i.e. there was no voiding of warranty per se.

I'd take the word of the warranty company over an individual dealer.

The BMW dash cam, I briefly considered but besides being large a user told me that it wasn't always easy to view both files (front and rear) and there were limitations on the parking mode, in other words he found himself popping out to works car park and resetting as it lasted 6 hours and he was at work for 8.

I don't know if firmware upgrades changed this, but this wasn't a dashcam I'd spend my money on.

Guess I can vaguely see their fear of possible inteference from a hard wired dashcam but I am not an auto electrian. Not so loopy though as Porsche who will void their warranty if you fit non Porsche approved tyres even though they may be the correct size and load/speed rating and from a top name such as Dunlop, Continental, Avon, etc, etc.

I'll take my dashcam with me on Tuesday and try and talk a bit of sense into them. However, I am not too confident and will probably forget the BMW dashcam, try to hide the cable from my current cam in the headlining and use the 12v ciggie socket until the Mk2 BMW is available and then review the situation.

Hardwired dashcam, I can see their point.

Mine uses a cig socket. If you use a booster battery that’s charged while running via cig socket then you’re fine too.

Just use cig socket and it’s basically an accessory like satnav, iPhone charger etc.

Mmmmm...... just spotted this on the General Gassing forum. Seems DAB interference can be a problem when routing cables around top of the windscreen. I assume the BMW dashcam is sufficiently screened to avoid this.

I was just about to book the wife's new M4 and my 7 series in for BMW cams. Will hold fire now I think. Does seem to be a lot of better options available on the market but our local dealer told me the same thing, it could/would invalidate the warranty. I'll speak with BMW direct on Monday as makes sense what has been said about ... won't if the cam/install is not to blame

One of the sales guys told me they fitted one to a new 7 series a few months ago and the DAB stopped working. Ended up having to take the rear camera out. Service guy at another dealer said they'd had no issues. Shame they can't link into the existing camera's on the car. The ones on my 7 are superb. I suspect it will be an option from factory sooner or later.

I have the MK1 BMW Advanced dash cam in my M140 - I have zero issues with DAB interference. I have heard the MK2 is due out next month ..much better design as you don't have the massive screen at the front!

If you run the rear cam wires down low rather than over the roof you’ll likely have better luck.

Agree on cars needing these as options.

With BMW headunits having storage and processing power, and parking cameras, wing mirror cameras, 360 view etc, it shouldn’t be hard to add these very cheaply and then charge handsomely for them.

My dash cam works very well BUT it does interfere with the DAB. I’ll take a look if BMW bring our a mark 2 camera. It could be worthwhile for me.

Is there any of the power cable exposed? If you can fit a ferrite core onto the power line it could fix your interference issues.

Thanks for that, I can’t see any power cable exposed, I had it installed as I’m really not a diy type. I’m really not up for fitting anything but I do remember the installer saying that the new cables would not interfere with the DAB.

Ferrite core is just a black collar to clip around the cable. You'll see it on a lot of cables around your house.
