Hi everyone, wonder if anyone can help. I am 99% decided on buying the 2005(354bhp)monaro. I have test driven a demonstrator with only 50 miles on the clock so nowhere near run in and therefore unable to try out the cars full potential. I would really like to see how fast this car really is before parting with my cash( without denting the speed limits too much). Does anyone with an un-modded car live near Uxbridge-Middlesex, and would they be willing to take me for a 'spin'. Happy to pay for the petrol.

Just to substantiate my first post,I was told by a regular well known forum contributor that i should put this request on the forum as you are all a pretty good bunch of guys who all love their cars and should be able to help. vauxhall are not holding any track days near to me in the near future as this would have been the preferred route. this is a genuine request.

I have to say, especially with 11 penalty points that there really is nowhere that you can explore the power of LS1/2 engines on public roads, sure there will be opportunities for ‘blasting’ but that is only when the conditions allow, it is very difficult just to go out and nail it, the only time you are going to experience what the car is capable of is on a long run. Have taken loads of people out in mine but never to the max on demand over short distances apart from off the line antics.

It’s a big heavy car and you will loose the back end without getting used to its characteristics, it’s taken a long time to feel confident on exploring the envelope and this is best done on the track. They are not speed limited and if the conditions were right and you had 5 miles plus of open carriageway I am sure 160 – 180 mph is possible, certainly on HSV/VXR models.

Well that’s my input anyway.

Bruntingthorpe on a standard HSV netted 154 mph (My car), speaking to a member with a blown HSV he acheived only 160 mph, thats on a 2 1/2 mile straight. Spoken to others that achieved over 180 mph on the open road, I've had 175 4-up on a standard HSV for example.

Polak- Just buy it. If its not fast enough, then it is easy to modify to gain the speed you require. In my case, I ran an un-modified HSV VT for nearly a year to get used to the car before increasing the bhp. Got used to that, so brought a newer HSV VX which had been Supercharged, made a few further improvements & after almost exactly 3 yrs still not bored with the 530 or so bhp the car has.

Guys, thanks a lot for all of your responses. I think I probably didn't explain myself properly.I am not interested in the top speed of the car.(unuseable on the road) i want to see what its like off the line and in gear acceleration driven by someone who has had the car for a while and can drive it.I am not asking anyone to break speed limits and get into bother. Does this make a difference?

I know it is frustrating, but trust the masses here, it is quick enough in gear or off the line (5.5 to 60 std ?) to keep up with most things.

By my personal experience, the engine is pretty loose from day one as i beleive they are run on the bench before the car.

I wish u the best of luck, but know that u will love it.

Polak- Still stand by my earlier reply. In standard form the Monaro should keep you happy for a while, but these cars are so easy & not too expensive to modify with great results.
Reckon you should try a VXR as well. Someone here can supply you a list of dealers if you need it.

Polak, just do it mate! In fact if you've got the extra cash get the 6.0 VXR, it's the mutt's nuts. And has brakes that are up to the job

I bought the 2004 model Monaro CV8 without even so much as clapping eyes on one except in a brochure and on TV, never mind test driving it. Some people thought I was being rather unwise, but I haven't looked back. It's enormous fun - not mind-numbingly quick like souped up Jap pseudo-rally cars (that virtually drive for you with their computers), because it's pretty heavy and is quite tail-happy if you push it too hard; but what it has got is style, road presence, exclusivity and - best of all - plenty of cubic inches :-) There's no replacement for displacement, as they say.

99% sure, mate? That's as good as, as far as I'm concerned. Go for it!

Oops, my mistake - it's the '04 models that have substantially different brakes.

I'm sure someone on here can put us right for sure

Edited to say: I went hunting for the relevant info as I'm sure it's already been discussed, but couldn't find it on here; the search facility is disabled.

Yes they have brakes. The first time you use them hard, however, they turn to porridge, and the second time they're about as much use as a wet fish.

Even so, the car is still a lot of fun!

LSV stock a range of pads which will help to improve your braking. Although not cheap, AP's will transform your car.

I may be able to help you out, you said you were 99% going to buy a 2005 Monaro......

Well if we could work on that 1%, and bring you round to buying a 400BHP 2004 Monaro thats currently on my drive then I'm sure I can take you for a test drive.

What do you think ?
