which side dipstick

I have always checked my oil cold but recently a friend said i should run the engine for a minute, turn it off then check oil in a couple of minutes. Is this correct?

After wiping and re-inserting the dipstick(no comments) have always judged the level on the side with the two dimples up, whilst the other side is always shows above maximum, the dimpled side appears correct. The car is a 98 Cloverleaf. Apologies if this sounds like a numpty Q but I cant seem to get a good reading if one side is dif to the other.
