Ok guru's, what's better for a hosting package - linux or windows? I am a mac user, and i have an expired a/c with fasthosts.co.uk which i need to renew. i dont really do much with websites, might just use it for storage and as a photo album! cheers

based on what you want to use it for, I would say the best is whichever is cheapest. Other than that you are pretty unlikely to see a difference.

Linux on the whole is cheaper and faster (on the same kit) as its a smaller, more compact OS.

The only real reason to use windows is if you want

MS SQL or
ASP(.Net)

If you dont (or dont know what these are ;P ) then I would say Nix is best / cheapest.

Feel free to message me via profile if you want a chat about it further.

oh, and click the banner in the top for a good Nix Deal

What is the register company like for support? fasthosts was good in the sense that you could call them on a normal number and speak to someone if you needed to. i also havent heard of register1 before. although for spec it looks class!

Support is 24/7, you get the benefit of funding more PHesque cars, and you get to join the raft of PH'rs who already have accounts

I signed up over a year ago and have had a few problems and have had a reply within a few hours.

In the past two months or so I've had two problems, one with my ISP refusing to relay messages to register1's SMTP server and the other because I switched cookies off - the support team helped on both and didn't make me feel more of an idiot than I did already

There has been no down time I've seen and my site happily flies along all day.

Only one problem with it - the Egyptian DNS servers don't recognise my site. I mean, thats entirely Jamies fault (joking in case the smilies don't help)

Come recommended by me and I'm one of those cynical people who call spades spades (I'd say if they were shite in other words).

I hear he's a bit of a cad

Seriosuly tho, try it for a month, if you dont like it, I'll give you your money back, simple.

But a VDS Pro on a 3-for-2 offer and I'll throw in a free domain or extension or summin, just for being a PH'r

You're some man! Thanks very much.

Didn't realise the price was less the VAT though!

Not sure, never needed to use the register1 support, but i'm told it's very good . One of my friends works at FH, so i know how many (thousands of) sites they squeeze onto each (single processor) server. The difference in speed (especially uploading and general FTP) on register1 is huge.
