Yes I know stupid question but I'll ask.
Used Car registered April 2016
Price is £45k
Model not that desirable.
Condition / Spec - very good.
but mileage higher than normal 40K+
Seller - franchised dealer but not of the make of the car.
No finance required - I know that is a negative point.

My first foray into this sort of price territory - usually buy cars for half that amount.
I am thinking of 8-9% discount
Please feel free to put me right!

Seems to very much depend on the dealer/the car/how much it owes them and how much they want rid!

I’ve been in the market for a new secondhand car lately at similarish budget, one dealer would not budge 2k on a 26k car despite now having it for 4 months - it’s a very odd colour. Another lopped off £3k off a 39k car in one hit without negotiation (I missed out!). Another has snipped their £42k car first by £2k, and then by another £500ish every couple of weeks to the point that it’s now less than the offer I made (but refused) a month ago. Just can’t understand how they work and have very different operating models it seems.

Thanks for the quick reply. Your experiences are very close to mine. I was watching a Main Dealer Vehicle (on the official manufacturers website. It started off at £42K and came all the way down to £37.5 but the wife didn't like the interior colour. Whilst the main dealer nearest to me has had one on for £39K for at least 3 months and will not budge.

All dealers have different pricing and stock policies. Some have cars at a fixed no haggle price (often odd numbers at the end of the price) where as others have movement.

If it’s a small franchise dealer and the car is say a Range Rover it might be a staff car and the person who runs it does not need to move it on somkeeps waiting for the right price. I have also come across a dealer that will only reduce a car to their stand in value and after 60 days it goes to auction if unsold.
