Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.....

I'm interested in buying a new car from a private seller. It is four years old and was first registered in September 2014. The HPI check flagged up an unusual sequence of mileage. Within one month it has an RMI mileage of 53,664 (October 2014). Not sure if that's even possible!

The mileage sequence then follows as:
- September 2015: 14,905
- September 2016: 29,512
- March 2017: 37,993
- September 2017: 45,877
- Current mileage (April 2018): 50,776

Any ideas? I'd like to have some feedback if possible before going back to the seller. The mileage data on the HPI check says : Warning: Mileage data is supplied by third parties and may not be correct.

Confused.

Considering it won't have had its first MOT until last year (unless it's a taxi), i'd take those mileages with a pinch of salt.

Thanks Rich. The mileage figures all 'seem' to stack up apart from the first reading of 53,664. Having read about others with HPI/Mileage issues it can often be traced back to a faulty data entry. This would make sense but not sure how to verify. Maybe I could ask the seller to get the DVLA to check their records?

What car is it?
It has to be an ex taxi or similar looking at the dates.

It's an Outlander Phev. I'll take a look at the paperwork at some point when I meet the seller again and confirm who the previous owner was. With that sort of mileage I'm thinking taxi or Sales Rep.

53664 miles in one month gives an average speed of over 70mph, day in day out, for 24 hours per day.
Taxi, Sales Rep, Endurance Racer or fat fingers?
Does it have a cage and fire extinguisher?

Thanks Wooda80. I knew it looked high but just did the same calculation and you're right. It's impossible as it would mean constant 24 hour driving for 30 days at over 70mph. For a start, that's not possible on the clogged up motorways!

Puts my mind at rest. I've asked the seller to clarify the data held by the DVLA.

I'd wager it's probably just 5364 or 5664 with a fat-fingered moment. Still quite high for one month though!

Could one confirm mileages at each service with the Dealers who stamped the service book?

The reg is is GK64PKN.

Had first MOT last September. As it is fairly new the DVLA have limited history on the car. Hybrid so no tax due.

The service book looked legit with Mitsubishi dealer stamps at intervals to match the mileage (apart from the opening 50+ k miles).

Strange.
Cant be a taxi etc as it would've had an MOT before 3 years.

It was up for sale in November 17 so this guy clearly hasn't done all the mileage.

My bet is it's just an error.

I think the only trace of mileage available would come from the service history.

Thanks to you all for your feedback. I am much less confused now and happy to go ahead with the purchase. As mentioned, all the dealer service stamps correspond to the registered mileage from the first year onwards.

Having looked into this today there are lots of others with a similar issue which all points to sloppy admin somewhere along the line. I'm happy to take it up with the DVLA once the car is registered in my name.

The car itself is in great condition. The paintwork on the Outlander isn't great and lots of those I saw in advance which were high mileage (50k +) had chips all over the bonnet and wings. This one is immaculate apart from one chip. Looks like it has been well kept inside and out which gives me more confidence.
