Number plate spacing
Discussion
You should, and it should fail the mot, but I doubt you’ll ever get pulled over for it unless the police that see you really have nothing to do that day.
The amount of badly placed plates I see it’s clear no one gets pulled over for it
Post a photo on here, it will make it easier for us to post it in the crappy modified plates thread where it belongs

Doubt you'll get pulled, but you might end up on here:

Really pisses me off this.
Imo, offenders should be pulled over and given an on the spot fine and three, or better still six penalty points.
If you want to spend a lot of money and buy ABC 1 or whatever, fair enough, that is a legitimate plate.
Sorry if I sound like a killjoy, but you can't just bend the rules to suit yourself.
Half of them look ridiculous anyway.

Hi guys,
I've just been bought a private plate i'll use this as an example X2 0JS
The plate I have has it displayed as X20 JS so there's one character moved left.
What's the likelihood I'd get pulled over for this?
Thanks

The DVLA should enforce the option they have of rescinding number plates which are illegally spaced and apply a non-transferrable year relevant VRM to the offending vehicle.
I can't get too excited over this as long as the font is legitimate and the correct size. Seems pretty harmless.
ANPR is quite capable of identifying a string of characters and then checking against a database to narrow the potential matches down to 1 or 2 'real' plates. The vehicle can then be used to identify the specific one.
Also if the vehicle is involved in an incident then a 'personalised' plate is often easier to remember than a standard one.
Maybe time for a change in the law.
Before I get roasted, I can think of a lot better things to spend a minimum of £250 on.

I can't get excited about people moving the space about, in the real world it makes absolulety no difference to reading the plate , its a string of numbers and letters, it wouldn't effect a phone number so it wont a numberplate. The people that adjust the actual spacing to mislead is another story, like sticking 1and 3 together to make a B or use coloured bolts to add or hide bits and change characters. But i guess rules is rules and if you bent them a little, where would we be ? (France) according to Bill Murray

I don't understand why people get so pissed over private plates and especially when they are re-positioned
The DVLA make millions from the sale of these plates and we all know if a plate's combination can be adjusted or re-positioned to read something different then the plates are more expensive.
IMO the DVLA should stop selling private plates if you can be fined for adjusting the layout

If they advertised them mis-spaced etc then I'd be inclined to agree with you.The DVLA make millions from the sale of these plates and we all know if a plate's combination can be adjusted or re-positioned to read something different then the plates are more expensive.

However, they don't advertise them mis-spaced, specifically say they shouldn't be mis-spaced & publish all manner of clear guidance on that & other rules in relation to the specs of plates & how they must be displayed/fitted.
I have a few private plates, they are not altered or displayed illegally though.

Totally agree with the sentiment.

Yes because the DVLA force the plate owner to go get it printed differently to what was purchased and fit it to their car?
Hants, I didn't say they did, however they do increase the price of plates that CAN be re positioned to read something completely different from the original layout of the characters. My point is double standards by the DVLA

I agree it's nearly as bad as people who do 71 mph on a clear dry motorway. Bending the rules like this needs to be punished severely. Imo, offenders should be pulled over and given an on the spot fine and three, or better still six penalty points.

No issues with DVLA profiting off morons wishing to float the laws if you ask me My point is double standards by the DVLA
. Charge them extra, revoke the place due to mis placed letters and repeat = more money in government coffers. D1ckie said:

They warn them they can't mis-space etc quite clearly.
It's not double standards.
Their message is very clear.
Here is the plate, you can buy it but you can't alter it, do you want to buy it? And if you alter it we'll take it off you & you won't get your money back.
