Air Flow Metering Unit??

Can anyone help or give me some feedback??

Have got a Chimaera 4.0lt HC thats been throwing out CO readings 6-7 times higher than legal maximum requirements.

Was told by TVR garage,they never run to specification anyway,not designed to.Supposedly had it tweaked they then get it through MOT,give me emissions report saying all okay,I drive away (car still smells like a petrol tanker leaking,and running lumpy) and within 60 miles have another emissions test done and car running 6-7 times too rich again.Get back to them,tell them its now failed Emissions test again and running dead lumpy as before they had it!! They suggest Air Flow Metering Unit needs calibrating,they send re con unit get it put on and car running a dream,dead smooth,smells like CATS doing their thing again and passed an emissions test now!!!!!

Having paid £??? already (to be fair included other work aswell),having supposedly put car right in the first place,am now asked for another £300!!! Surely the unit either works or it doesn't,have been told
how an airflow meter can adjust itself under electrical resistance?? Still seems strange how within 3-4 miles of them geting back from MOT centre its out of spec again,yet when the Re con unit is fitted it runs fine all the time!! Any input to this would be most welcome please.

If I've understood you right, they managed to fudge the emissions test by fiddling with the original unit but didn't solve the underlying problem, but subsequently swapped the meter out which did solve the problem completely. In which case you probably do need to repair or replace the AFM, and obviously you will have to pay for this (I assume the work you've already paid for doesn't include replacing the AFM). £300 doesn't sound outrageous to me for an exchange AFM.

ARE U TAKING IT TO A PROPER TVR APPROVED GARAGE, I THINK NOT.BELEIVE IT OR NOT IT WILL COST U LESS IN THE LONGRUN.

i think you will find they werent really sure what was wrong with your car or were in a rush so shoved the emissions pipe up another car then when you went back they really did fix it or they swapped it already but forgot to reset the ecu anyway something dodgey has happened. i would recommend finding another garage what ever happens now you dont trust them and probably will never be happy with there work again
