Firstly, I couldn't see an apt place to put this, so move if required.

S is 40 in October. I need to think of ideas for what to get her/ do for her. The thing is, for my 40th last year she sent me and the best friend to Maranelo/Modena for 4 days, to see Ferrari and Lamborghini, she's set a standard.

There aren't many things she really big on, but these are the main ones.

Fashion, shoes, and handbags. Her taste is personal to her, and I wouldn't dare risk getting anything along these lines.
She's animal crazy.
She has a background in beauty.
Chocolate.
Gardening.
The countryside.

There really isn't much more I can think of, and I'm really struggling to come up with ANY ideas. Anyone care to save me?

Food my wife likes going in cake courses at pru leith cookery school.

country side well there are many wonderful spa hotels dotted about the place.

Alternatively buy her a Ducati and say you will use it together....

Your closest friend and soulmate and you think a bunch of blokes on a car website who have never met her or known her can come up with something better?

VIP Keeper for a Day at experience at Woburn Safari Park followed by a night at Woburn Hotel and maybe a Spa at Aqa Sana with some treatments. Perhaps a facial.

Good ideas, except the last one, which would go down like a fart in a lift....

Very good thinking, she actually did similar when younger, and really loved it. Save the facial for when back at the hotel room, am I doing this right? evil

My birthday is also at the back end of the year and for my 40th I went to Tromso to see the northern lights, which we did do, but actually the best thing was the dog sledding. Would this be the kind of holiday your wife would like?

Give her £2 and tell her that buys her a knackered donkey for a month.

Based on the adjacent Mumsnet thread, shopping at Dorthothy Perkins in the day, evening spitroast then facial.

She won't know what's come over her.

The MN guidance doesn't say for a birthday whether you as the husband are one of the spitroasters, or if it should be a kinky occassion such that the wife, her friend and some plastic tooling turn you into the spitroastee?

I'm with you OP, I'm terrible for ideas for this sort of thing, fortunately the wife is aware and organised her own 40th party along with her friend who was 50. We also went away for her 40th, but it needed much hinting!

She did fk all for me!

Anyway a good friend of hers has an "amazing" and "thoughtful" husband who gave his wife a small present every day leading up to her 40th, starting 40 days before hand, which culminated in a holiday with him (I fking hate him for being so bloody thoughtful!!).

Just an idea.
