I posted on here the other day about a 4 series I was looking at but unfortunately that sold before I could go see it. A family member is however now wanting to sell there 59plate 635d which I have always liked even though most people hate the looks !!

What are people’s thought on the car / engine are they generally reliable ? It’s only done 53k so I’d expect it to be a while before any big bills surface with such low mileage, the only thing really putting me off is that fact it’s a Euro 4 Diesel ... I know it’s hard to tell what’s going to happen with diesels at the minute but do people think it will likely become worthless in the next 2/3 years or should it hold onto its value reasonably ?

I like these cars, but would be minorly concerned that as a so-called 'dirty' diesel it and any of its ilk will be hit by higher VED in future, or clean air emissions charges in towns/cities.

The latter depends on your motoring - if you are in London every day it would be a problem, the Highlands of Scotland less so.

Likewise, VED will most likely shoot up, but not to such a ridiculous amount out of keeping with the funds required to run this kind of car.

My feelings are that the Tories are trying to avoid any massive VED increases unless totally forced to do so because of the bad headlines associated with that in terms of using the motorist as a whiipping boy. Labour if/when they get in will clobber these.

If a rise in VED is the only thing to change then I will be happy, as I live up north so local towns will hopefully not introduce any emissions zones. It is more the depreciation that’s worrying I don’t want a £10k car to only be worth about £3k in 2/3years time.

I doubt a 9 year old diesel BMW will be remembered, maybe a 645 or 650 but I can't see a 635d resisting depreciation much
