I've seen a few dateless plates on modern cars lately and it got me wondering. Could I move the plate (for example XGB 629) from my classic onto my modern car, which would in-turn prompt the DVLA to issue another dateless plate to the car (1960) , when then I could swap them back, thus gaining me a new plate?

I'm sure I'm missing something....

Any replacement plate issued by DVLA is non transferable.

Yes, you are missing that the new plate would be non-transferable.

Ah, didn't realise that bit. Couldn't cope with the car not having its original plate.

I think that is assuming they have correctly coded that aspect on the V5 which they failed to do on my last one ahem...
