I recently joined a company where everyone has an electronic assisted stand up/adjustable desk (not that all use it in standing height mode however). It's the first company I've worked for that have these and actively promote the use of them. I've had lingering moderate back ache for a few years now, but in the last 5 weeks or so I've been stood at my desk all day, well all I can say is my back feels so much better that I hardly feel that pain anymore! Naturally it feels quite odd at first and the legs ache initially, but I've also found I feel less sleepy (especially post lunch) and more alert than i have done before.

Anyone else using one of these desks?

I do - not my personal desk but there are a number around. I find it pretty good / flexibility to stand or sit.

Yep, got one, they are great. Even if you don't use it standing up, you can set it much higher than a normal desk, which stops you slouching, improves your posture, etc..

I’ve not seen them side by side or back to back instead in closed off office or specifically for those with back problems.

I use one of the electric ones from Ikea. Cost about £400 all in I think and I love it (so do the kids!). Makes a big difference to my posture when at the laptop all day.

I also sometimes use one of those "gym balls" to sit on.

Work from home and also have one of the Ikea electric ones. All day is hard going (but I don't have any special mat and not wearing shoes either), I tend to have it lowered/sitting in the morning and raise for the afternoon post-lunch lull. If I need to focus for an hour-long call then I tend to raise it too.

I found a monitor with height adjust is necessary too, a good height for sitting will be too low for standing if you work off where your arms should be. I raised mine a couple of inches and find I go from near enough lowest for sitting to highest for standing. Can get adjustable monitor arms quite cheaply now if the stand on yours doesn't adjust.

Had one in my last office and really missing it. Brilliant for posture and concentration and just a bit of variety. Also if you're over 5 ft tall it's great to raise it a bit and not feel like you're using kids' furniture when you're sitting down as well!

Yes, we have them side to side and back to back. I'm often stood over my manager, not sure what he thinks about that. soapbox

Agree, definitely feel more focused.

We have some in our office. Height adjustable ones are at the end of every other row. Only a matter of time before someone gets fingers caught between a static desk and the height adjustable ones when someone lowers it lower than the adjacent desk!

Personally I tend to use these when I can (it's all hotdesks) but raise it about 2 inches and sit comfortably. Not tried standing yet but a few people do for brief periods during the day.

I have an IKEA Franken standing desk I made from a couple of different models - I rarely stand with it, but I do find the extra adjustment very useful as I can be a bit fidgety. I never really got into the whole standing part for any length of time, as mentally I find that I’m only being productive when sat down.

current workplace has fixed high desks for order closers ( a 'dark store' for a tech retailer so a mixture of computer work , warehouse work and 'till operator' type tasks) - they are just around standing desk height for people of average -ish height , we've also got 'draughtsman' height office chairs for those who wish to sit. quite a few people swap and change between sitting and standing across the course of the working day

I purchased an electric sit/stand desk a few months ago. After years of just sitting at a desk it felt strange to stand and type. I now find the desk really good and I switch bewteen sitting and standing during the day and my back feels better for it.

I also change the desk height when sitting which I had not expected.
I bought a anti-fatigue mat which makes standing more comfortable.
