Hi all

Anyone care to add their measured top speed (gps or laser) on a straight run. I'd like to know where my car should be, given a ~2.5km straight run from a standing start.

Ta & cheers

Testing at Bruntingthorpe the other day and could only JUST manage 160mph (GPS) best (moderate HEADWIND) (managed 150mph into same wind with my 355bhp WRX? and the electronically limited 187 on my GSXR1000.

M400

0-120 fast (for a car)

120-140 ok

140-160 struggles

Found the same at Spa going up hill into Les Combes (145 best)

My last Audi S4 (400bhp) would probably beat the M400 from 140 upwards. That hit the engine rev limiter in 6th gear with 168mph on the GPS, (Germany) but if it had been geared higher it seemed to have the power to punch 180+?

I think the M400 will struggle to get much more than 160 without some aero mods. FORGET the est. 185 in the spec. either that or perhaps I just have a not so good one?

Interested to see if anyone has done better in an M400?

Tom,
That seems slow. I've seen 168 on the clock of my 3R, and Simon at the factoy says there pretty damned acurate.

Tom, I got a measured 165 on my M400, which I think is too slow. A dyno of the car showed a dip in the power between 6000 and 7000 rpm, exactly where you don't want a dip for a highspeed run. Maybe you have the same problem I have?

Mine's getting looked at, so we'll see....

I didn’t notice the M400 speedo at 160, only the GPS, but between 50mph and 150mph I noted that the car Speedo seems spot on, not more than 1mph out. THAT’S ACCURATE!

My S4 4.2V8 using the same GPS clocked 178 when doing 168mph on the GPS

My GSXR1000 shows 186mph on the GPS when the bikes digital speedo shows 187, how good is that!

Martin,
If a standard 3R gets 168mph then you would expect the M400 to be quicker, well over 175 to 180mph (I dare say I may have had a 15-20mph headwind and with that added to my 160mph would be nearer the mark. I wanted to test down wind but that’s not a good idea when there were about 30 or so people high speed testing that day at Bruntingthorpe!!!

Ian,
Was your 165 into wind? How many miles has the car doen, I mean is it well run in? Mine has only done about 3300miles so maybe it will loosen up some more? I was using 98 fuel. Was the dip in bhp or torque? I think the car spec’s claims peak power at around 6250? So perhaps it falls off rapidly after that? Anyone now the RPM/MPH in 6th gear?

Cars at factory at the moment and then I am at Donington on the 5th May (track day with some friends from Crossroads garage) so wont get a chance to high speed test until Bruntingthorpe again the following week. I will check RPM V MPH V GEARS and record all on DVCAM.

Anyone else got any input?

160-165 is a bit disappointing

Top speed has a lot to do with drag and I don't think the Noble is particularly slippy.

Theres a video of the M14 being wind tunnel tested on the Noble website, so with luck it might be a bit slippier. I'd be surprised if they had the time/money to do this on the m12 derivatives.

The M400 will achieve 177mph @ 6700rpm in 6th gear.

At Vmax the Nobles seem to have trouble.

All about drag.

I managed 156 in my 3R, into a moderate headwind. But the car was suffering from a (power sapping) turbo gasket leak it later transpired. But I think Joust has gone faster, maybe 160.

The GT3 with c.25 more hp easily saw 172, with what is just a much more aero shape.

But down the dragstrip the Noble was pretty darn untouchable.

Simon

Is the 185 est without the wing then?

Not much difference 8mph, but every little helps.

Although I've done no real 'top-end' testing (due owning my M400 for just over a week), it seems effortless from 100-150. Mine is 10 months old and has just clocked 10k miles. Maybe the fact that its loosened up helps a little...? There also must be an amount of performance variation between these low volume, hand built cars.

Other general observations are that this is the fastest accelerating, best handling car I've ever experienced - I absolutely love it!!!

I think the correct figure is 26.5mph per 1000 rpm. Or is it 27.5?

Sam - not that simple.

My 2.5l, standard, 316bhp, was recorded at 162mph with the timing gear set "quite a long way forward", despite, it transpire, not being in full fettle......

Brunters is very very wind dependant. I'd always take any speed recorded there with a "bucket load" of salt.

185mph was an estimate, released to the press before we'd properly tested the car.

177mph is realistic - just - given enough space.

I want a partial refund then.

Now, thats 185 mph, divided by the cost of the car, minus the missing 8 mph convert that to cash , add the grin factor ...................................

Simon, please let me know how much in grin factor I owe you
