I really don't like getting my Jag dirty on a Sunday morning, so I'm looking for a cheap 4x4 runabout for use once a week.

Budget around £1500, and would like 4x4 with a split tailgate. I've seen a few P38 Range Rovers for around that money, reliability isn't a huge issue as it's not the end of the world if it decides to not start. Economy isn't an issue either as I'll only be doing about ten miles per week.

Other than a P38, is there anything else I should be considering?

P38s are great - diesels are slugs / petrols are fun but at that budget you might be getting one which is needing a lot of work
might get an old disco - or if lucky a classic RR - otherwise any of the farmer type 4x4s - x-trails / jimnys pickups / etc.

If hunt hunt out a Cherokee at that money. There was an Orvis edition that had lots of toys iirc.

Toyota hilux surf. Owned a 3.0td for a couple of years with zero issues, 2 batteries, semi active suspension and lots of other bits and bobs on there. Easily pick one up for £1500. Bit basic looking compared to the Range Rover but won’t let you down.

Wouldn't you be better off with a gun?

Is this for British-countryside-jaunt shooting?

Or drive-by-gangsta shooting?

Cadillac Escalade should fulfill the latter..

Isuzu Trooper - used a £1500 one for 7 years as my shooting vehicle. Everything you need.
