Car suggestions please

My neighbour has a W210 Mercedes E220 CDi, and he’s decided to change it

His budget is around £3500 plus the Merc (£500?) and he’s wanting auto prefereably and something classy!

He’s looked at W211 facelifts, and also Lexus IS models. Any other recommendations? He doesn’t want a BMW, as he’d like something newer than a 2007 (his words)

Are there any cars that are off the radar, but fit the bill?

At that price point I'd be more concerned with spec & mileage rather than the year:

I'd rather go for a lower mileage older W211 personally.
