I’m considering one of these big old barges with the big V8 and four wheel drive, and wondered if anyone has experience of running a high-mileage example?

The one I’m looking at is a 2006 Avant SE, with 154,000 on the clock and full Audi service history.

I know it will drink fuel, and hurt me if it breaks. I’m not going to be doing mega-miles in it.

Thoughts and opinions welcome.

The killer for these cars is the timing chain it's at the back of the engine & the plastic guides can fail, but you can get the wear checked before you buy so that's something to consider also give the gearbox a good check over too, apart from that they're pretty strong cars.

I had an S6 (c6) with this and it was a great engine. Racked up c.60k miles in 18mths commuting from Newcastle to Colchester and Paris and the only reason I ended up getting rid of it was due to cracking 2 manifolds.

It was then sold to a guy who exports Audi’s from the U.K. over to Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland and a few other eastern block countries where they’re repurposed as taxis and he was over the moon with it and oddly laid near top dollar for it

Fuel efficiency wasn’t ace but it was 28.5mpg hand calc over the distance covered.

I ran it on a shoestring really and it didn’t want for anything other than consumables and a windscreen wiper motor when I had it.

Can't comment on the v8 engine, but I have had a 3.0tdi C6 Avant for a couple of years, it's now on 209K miles.

They're built like tanks, had very few problems considering its age. I've mapped it, uprated the shocks and rear anti roll bar (recommended), and deleted the silencers. I've really quite enjoyed working on it, it's a quality vehicle overall.

Only thing I'm struggling with is the gearbox... the ZF Tiptronic Automatic. When it's cold the shifts are not great, and it occasionally pops out of reverse if you don't give it time to engage properly.
