I'm doing 4hr plus rides on my shimano shoes which I've had for a few years but I'm finding I get a real pain in the ball of the foot after about 3 or so hours. Any idea what could be the issue? It goes away when I stop pedalling so it's not an injury. I'd switched to new insoles before the winter to combat numbness and to support a high arch. I seemed to have solved one but created another problem.

I'm considering buy a new pair but not sure how I can gauge how good they're going to be after a few hours in the saddle. Don't want to shell out decent money to find they're no better.

It's difficult to gauge fit, do you have wide / narrow feet?

I have quite wide feet and really struggled with Specialized shoes initially, too narrow in the toe box for me.

I've since switched to Bont and find that they work well for me, they can be heat moulded as many times as needed to work out any niggles too.

A lot of shoes are available in wide fit if you need it.

Eh? hehe

Depends on your budget but may be worth seeing a podiatrist for some custom orthotics. Got some in my shoes after some foot issues. Cost over £300, mind....but worth it.

They look like those balls you put in the wash to clean down jackets! I'll have a go with them.

I'm on SPD-SL, I think i'll go out and search for a new pair, with a wide toe box.
