Do we want a private police force?
Discussion
Well we’ve got one, and it wants to spread. I don’t. Put a uniform on and the little hitlers spread.

Link won’t load properly but are they not more of a private security firm rather than the actual police? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5696353/Br...
Do they have the exact same powers as the police?
Alot of ex forces and police end up in private security.

Newham has old form for their 'civil enforcement officers' behaving like cops, wearing police-style uniforms and generally acting above their authority. I don't agree with this at all but it's only meeting a demand: nature abhors a vacuum, and most, if not all police forces have created a vacuum by directing their reduced resources on trendy crime that ticks the political correctness targets, motorists, snowflakes getting 'offended' and generally ignoring 'too-hard' crimes like burglary, theft and ASB that most people want them to concentrate their efforts on. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5696353/Br...

What's the problem? The police are under-funded in this country so why not let people pay for additional security if they want? From what I can tell this is just a private security firm though. I can't imagine they have any powers of arrest outside of a citizen's arrest that anyone can do in the right circumstances. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5696353/Br...
So dressing up in important-looking uniforms (a common trick of dictators) and marching round like you run the place is ok?

"moves on drunks and drug addicts" How do they do that then?
I think the erosion of the authority a genuine police uniform conveys is short-sighted and not good. There's already parking wardens, security guards, and special constables and the like walking round like robocop. Scotes will know they can tell them to f
k off, meanwhile little old men will comply when told they "can't wait there" or whatever.

That's a well-reasoned and intelligent counter argument. I'd call you a moron but I doubt you've attained such a high degree of intelligence.Edit: Damn, I've only gone and fed a troll.

Christ, people moan when there aren’t enough police to go round and moan when they try and do something about it.
Kind of where I am tbh.Christ, people moan when there aren’t enough police to go round and moan when they try and do something about it.
It's private security. If they start doing daft stuff like trying to ask people for ID when they presumably have no more authority to do so than you or I then of course that needs dealing with, but I don't see how this is any different than if me and the neighbours chip in and hire a guy to stand at the end of the road keeping an eye who comes in and out?

They're just private security guards paid to roam the streets and keep an eye on those who can afford to pay for them - No different to any other security guard.
Their only power of arrest will be the same afforded to any other member of the public - A citizen's arrest - Nothing more.
They will have no exemptions from any Laws, and no authority to stop, search or question anyone.

It's not a private police force as others have said, nor a de facto one as the DM asserts.
It's no different from private investigators, door supervisors, wheel clampers, close protection for high-profile people. Organisations and people with money paying for private security is nothing new.
I'd be cautious of believing the DM when writes something without a source, such as "moves drunks on" etc.
Edit: Damn, I've only gone and fed a troll.Have a look at prison offence data.
How come prisons are full of violent criminals, drug dealers, burglars etc (the portions which haven't changed pre / post reduced resources) if there's been a change and focus on:

You do realise special constables are genuine police?

If you're not a scrote why would you care if somebody is walking around in a Police-type uniform?
I'm not entirely sure that this development is a good one.
I sometimes park a spare car in Hampstead Garden Suburb, because it is the nearest place to my house with unrestricted parking and the Res Parking around me limits me (reasonably) to one car on my ticket at a time.
The private security goons have been employed there for years and might be expected to know the ropes and the limits of their own powers. Instead, it is well known in NW London that they can be really quite bumptious, even aggressive, to non-residents. These are fully public roads.
When I park there, they often attempt to question me or even tell me to move on. They can also get aggressive when asked on what authority they are questioning me or ordering me to move. I actually had to flag down a passing police officer on one occasion to set the chap straight, as he was clearly contemplating manhandling me.

Private security firms can undertake some policing roles e.g. penalty notices, vehicle stops https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/communi...
Surprised to read that retired policemen are policing, have we not been told that the police can retire early because they are no longer physically capable of being policemen?
