Yeah, the reason for that is to make sure cashiers handle change, rather than just pocketing it, so there is a reason.

With it was more like 5p than 1p though - what use is a penny when you're trying to make up beer money?

Some companies don't stoop to this level (e.g. M&S ) but they're few and far between...

HMV (and probably other music shops) stock CD singles with the following sticker attached to the front of the case:

"Don't expect to pay any more than £2 for this single."

So, that'll be £1.99 then.

Problem is, if you want to buy something for, say £4 you'd have to give five 99p coins, which comes to £4.95. So there would be 95p change. As such, there may be some sense in having a 95p coin to make the change simpler!

The other option is to change from counting in base 10 to, say, base 12. So a £1 in base 12 would be the equivalent of £1.44 in base 10. This could simplify things!
