Asbestos ?.....

whilst walking around the garden yesterday I noticed some thin sheets of something hidden away next to the shed which I think may be asbsestos. I don't know why I think they are asbestos as I have never seen it. We have not been in the house long and are only starting to explore the garden now that the weather is looking up.

Can anyone on here help me with the following questions

1. how can I tell if it is asbestos
2. how can I get it removed, is this a job best left for the pro's
3. just how dangerous is asbestos sheeting ?, I know i was used in buildings up to the 30's (i.e. garage roofs and coving ?). But how woried should I be.
4. if it is asbestos is it ok for the previous owner to just leave it in the garden ?.

Asbestos sheeting will be mottled grey and the edges will be fibrous

Contact your council, you are not allowed to remove it from your premises

Only dangerous when broken. Dust is generated as the fibrous brake. The normal way to reduce the hazard is to hose it down and keep it wet.

Asbestos is fine provided it is left alone.

It is only if you have to move it or demolish it that you have to seek professional advice and contact the Environmental Health and Building Regs offices of the Council I think.

AFAIK You can remove asbestos sheeting from your garden,so long as it is double bagged and disposed of at a regulated point eg.a special closed skip at your local dump?I removed an old garage from my property and discussed this very thing with the council.Voila, no more garage.
