Community volunteers with speed guns strike back at motorists

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/stories-43841859

A growing movement in the UK is shifting the power of catching speeding motorists from the police, to the people.
"My daughter was going to school and one of her friends was killed by a vehicle," says John Ryan.
"The school assembly that morning when the children were told was terrible. The school didn't recover for about a year. It had a very big impact on the children and particularly my daughter." Now, 20 years later, the retired bus driver has joined a network of volunteers trying to make the roads safer.
Twice a week, he patrols the area where he lives in west London with a speed gun and two police community officers, noting down car registration details of drivers breaking the limit. In one spot next to a school, he typically catches 20 vehicles breaking the 20mph limit in a one-hour session. He once caught a car travelling at 45mph.
"It just shows what we're up against as a community," he says.................continues

How long before some suggest these vigilantes become official speed check operatives?

It's been at least 17 years and counting so far.

Yeah, it's my right to drive past a school at 45mph between 3pm and 3.30pm!

If the police can't do it, then why not? I'm sick and tired of being tailgated by angry motorists who want to exceed the speed limit because they don't mind getting points on their licence.

I have no issue at all with people getting collared for speeding in residential areas. If people are prepared to give up their own time to help make their communities safer it is to be applauded in my view.

Agreed. I overtook a bus the other day on a NSL road who was doing around 45. Got to the next village and I slowed down to the speed limit (30). A couple of minutes later who was tailgating me? The bus!

Maybe they should put the camera vans somewhere useful for a change such as near schools and actually catch people speeding in properly dangerous places, rather than hidden just over the crests of various recently reduced 40 or 50 limit straight roads....

Depends where they sit I suppose. I agree in school zones and some busy residential streets. The local nimby brigade here sit at the first junction in the village, about 100m into a 30zone from a NSL. They then complain they catch dozens of folk every day who are still coasting down at 35-45.

The actual police have been sitting their more than recently, nice opaque wall for them to sit behind and good visibility of the road right down to the NSL sign, must be a nice money maker for them.

In our village, we're also tired of entitled aholes driving through the 30 mph zone at over 40 mph. The amount of damage caused to cars which have been clipped or hit by speeding cars runs into tens of thousands of pounds with two relatively new cars (less than 3 years old) written off, our garden wall has had to be rebuilt or repaired 3 times since we bought it 7 and a half years ago, and the previous owners had to have it rebuilt twice in the 3 years they were here, and that's just ours.

When this was done here a few months ago, despite being very visible, more than 1 in 6 cars was travelling over 35 mph and 1 in 10 over 40 mph. I wish all those caught had fines, points and bans instead of a minor ticking off by letter being sent to them.

Do what you like (within reason) in NSL roads with no houses around but I'd be happy to castrate all those speeding through built up areas and villages.

On our 30 limit road some people do drive at over 30 and yet no one has been killed or injured. Go figure!

That's because they bloody well shouldn't be coasting down from 60/50/40 by the time they're in the 30 mph zone. An inch inside the sign and you need to be at 30 mph. There are plenty of villages in Northamptonshire where the 30mph signs are level with the driveway of the first house in the village so with your behaviour, you'd still be zooming past their house, to which is inside the 30 mph zone, at well over 40-50 mph. Get a grip and learn the Highway Code.

Do you want someone to die before doing anything?

So far better to go from NSL, to slamming your brakes on emergency stop style to instantly comply with a 30mph sign you've only just seen? rolleyes

...or you could try looking a bit further ahead, then you wouldn't have "only just seen" the 30 sign as you go past it at 60, ffs...

It's not as if they usually come as a surprise, given all the other things that tend to happen around the edges of villages etc.

Road that goes past our close is 30 mph. But it is wide. If you try driving at 30 (even 35 to be honest) you will be tailgated or overtaken. Trucks, buses, cars. All do at least 40 and some over 50. One of the residents wrote to the council. They basically used the above. Because it is a relatively new road no-one has died yet so not the top of their priority list. So we just need some residents to make the ultimate sacrifice to push it up the list...

Not as many cars to get £100 a time off doing that though...

So someone tailgates you so what .

Most tail gateing truckers would not be able to fight an old granny in a boxing ring so they are hardly any threat to you !

Drive a safe speed in built up areas if you kill somebody because you were being tailgated and put the hammer down the judge wont take any notice He will just blame you .

So you come around a corner, not all roads are straight in the UK, have you noticed that? And slam the brakes on? Very sensible driving. Not.

You should always be able to come to a stop within the distance you can see ahead of you. So if you can't get down to 30 mph easily then you are going too fast around the corner. So yes, not very sensible driving on your part.

The point is that you can come to a stop by performing an emergency stop, but to do so just because you have seen a 30mph sign is not safe or sensible driving.

It's pretty much a done deal that for safety reasons, every current 30mph road in Scotland will become a 20mph road before the end of this year ( expect England and Wales to follow in a year or two as usually happens with these new snowflake laws).
Does this mean that everyone who is currently driving just within the 30mph limit is actually a dangerous maniac, or does driving at 29mph not become deadly until the law changes?
