I’ve had an interesting letter from HMRC today demanding around 10k upfront as security against our vat returns.

Seems a little unfair.

We have only just registered for vat and haven’t even done a return yet!

I’ve put this too accountant but does anyone have experience of this?

Thanks guys, I had an old business that went under (not our fault) with a small VAT liability so I suspect that is the reason why Im getting this. Its a real kick in the balls considering we are slowly trying to rebuild things.

I work in the trades, its very frustrating as I know non of our competition will reg for VAT, and taking cash all day long. I try and keep things above board and seem worse off. Its already difficult for us to add VAT for our domestic clients.

They obviously don’t want to lose out on the money owed to them, again.

Is what it is by the sounds of things.

What a knacker kick. Not exactly helpful when you’re trying to get back on your feet.

Looks like there is some sort of appeal service which could be worthwhile.

Result was I ended up asked to go to a meeting with HMRC, I went, explained my case and they waved the bill!

All good.
