Quicky thicky Wireless thingy question.......
Discussion
Chaps,
I want to go wireless.
I have a Compaq nx9005 lappentoppen which has an HP WLAN 54g W450 Network Adaptor hidden somewhere in it's gubbins.
Can I go down to PC World, buy one of these, plug the bugger in, follow the idiot proof instructions, and roam around the house looking at all the porn without wires dangling around?
Can it all possibly be that simple?

But its more expensive!
Is it that much better?
Will the boobs appear quicker?
Actually on that note, how will a wireless thingy compare to the freebie cable modem I got from NTL? Quicker/slower/no noticeable difference?
(Thanks for the input BTW!

Not a WUSB54G, DJFish, as it is basically a wireless network adaptor for devices that don't have one. You have that end built in to your laptop.
You need the other end of the equation, which would be a WAP54G, which is a "wireless access point" and plugs into your existing network to add wireless to it.
How do you currently connect to the internet. Just your desktop, or do you have a network / router?
If the former then you will need something like Plotloss is suggesting - an all-in-one modem/router/firewall/W.A.P.
Edit: Ah, I see. In that case you will need an all-in-one thing. Instead of your PC connecting to your cable, the all-in-one thing does, and then your computer connects to that (via a wire) and your laptop also connects it (wirelessly)

If you're going to ditch your cable modem and use an all-in-one device then
a) you'll also need a standard network card to go in your PC (unless it has one built in already)
b) you should make sure that the all-in-one thing is a cable modem and not an ADSL modem
Make sure whichever device you choose has a built-in firewall (most do these days). The benefit is that you don't need to run, say, ZoneAlarm on each computer.

I connect to a Telewest cable connection which I think is the same technically as NTL.
If thats the case, you keep the NTL cable modem and connect it to a Wireless Router ( I use a Linksys WRT54G which has been great).
You mention that your laptop has a WLAN 54g W450 Network Adaptor - that should then connect to the WRT54G and give your interet connection.
The Linksys has a firewall and encryption to keep your network secure and stop your neighbours getting free broadband by using your connection.
