Thinking of going sensible after attempts to change my Abarth 595 Comp for a Peugeot 208GTi or similar came to nothing.

I think I have realised, if I want comfort, I need something with a larger wheel base. I like estates and they have longer wheel bases so that is where I am looking. I have singled out two cars that I like:

2013+ Skoda Octavia
Circa 2010-2013 Mercedes C220

Now both of these exist at this price point, but do so with high miles, especially so the Mercedes cars. But miles don't worry me so much. However, I would look to keep the car for some significant time so if I can minimise the miles that helps.

There is plenty of choice and I am not too picky on engines. Reluctantly happy to chose a diesel: Can't escape the fact that they are good on fuel, my drive suits them and there are plenty to chose from.

Essentially I want to know of any reliability issues. For the Skoda there are the 1.6 and 2.0 CR TDi engines and for the Mercedes its the 2.1 CDi.

Gearbox wise a lot of the Mercs have the 7-speed auto. There are also a good choice of DSG equipped Skoda's but my concern is longevity with many of the cars already wearing 70-80k miles. Not so worried over manuals nor the traditional auto-box.

Any one have any experiences of the above two cars and is there a third (or even fourth) way that I have overlooked? My commute is 30-miles each way so can't have anything too fond of the petrol pump.

They might not be, but these look bloody huge! Like Skoda Superb Estate huge. Bit on the large side maybe, though I will have a peruse on autotrader. I presume the 2 or 2.2 TDCi engines are generally good provided they've been looked after?

ETA: Seeing a fair few with the PowerShift DCT... not heard any horror stories on these so presumably they are robust?

I'd avoid the VAG 1.6 Tdi engine.

Injectors are about £1200 a set.

I've heard of a few people had them done recently.

The Powershifts are robust make sure the fluid & filters have been changed if they haven't budget £300 to have this done by the way they're only 20cm longer than the Octavia, the Mondeo would be the car I'd recommend in fact it was the one I went for when I was looking at a car in this segment.

Realistically its probably out of your budget....

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Although if you fancy something different to a Mondeo (which would be my choice)

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...

Or wild card would be a Freelander.

I wouldn't touch any VW with high mileage.

The 508 is a great call (it has the same running gear as the Mondeo) & well worth a look.

These come to mind:

Sensible estate - Mondeo/Insignia

Big estate - V70/E-Class

Tourer - 530d/A6 3.0

Fast estate - 335d/S4/C350

Leftfield - Stagea/Superb 3.6

Do like the mondeo. There is only really one nearby that looks worth a squirt. Though there appears to be some serious scrapage along the back bumper where it looks like stuff was loaded in using the bumper a guide/rest. But the rest of it looks good and its got the PS gearbox, heated seats, cruise, nav, the works and the mileage isn't offensive either.

There is also a 2011 V60 very close by. V60 SE Lux Geartronic. Also looks worth a shout. No heated seats mind, but that is ok. It is a D3 as well, so 5-cylinders.

There are quite a few Merc C220d's about but I am struggling to understand what is going on... they all seem to have different CO2/tax bands. I assume there is a point at which they started fitting "blueEfficiency" gubbins and the 7-speed auto? Is the older auto just a 5-speed?

I too have just picked up on the Pug 508. Not a shabby looking thing at all.
