2006 with pro nav, visibility package plus other upgrades including wheels but £1k above budget. It's only done 70k and drives very well but I'm not keen on the E60 interiors despite the upgrades, the wife on the other hand fell in love with it...

I was originally looking for a 7 series sport as they look a lovely place to spend time in and was going to be a replacement for an SUV which gets its knickers in a twist when the roads get twisty.

Question is what are the 530 M Sports like to own and do they hold their value well considering I will be going above budget? or should I just go for a 7 series? The car is used for longish trips out at the weekend and daily by the wife.

i use an E60 530d M Sport saloon for work duties.

I looked aat 7 series and A8 diesels, but there are so many issues with both that you have to remember they just aren't that cost effective to repair depending on how wrong they go.

mines a 56 plate so its a pre LCI. I would defo try and find a 57 plate onwards as this will be an LCI 5 series and as such the interiors are a nicer place to be along with the much improved ZF Gearbox. Mine was remapped and lowered by previous owner and it is incredibly quick, the torque is immense. The gearbox in mine is a dinosaur though but does motorway trips everyday perfectly. Would defo get the EGR and DPF deleted as well to avoid future issues.

The iDrives is old and clunky, and are also prone to having a hissy fit on the E60s and are very expensive fixes. Mine touch wood has been perfect, its on 136k now and drives sublime. Mine has xenons which was a must for me, surprising how many don't have them!

Stick to an LCI and in Msport guise. and the must have... The 19'' Spyder wheels!

I had both an LCI 535d M Sport and a pre LCI 535d M Sport. Loved them both.

The LCI (Life Cycle Impulse / facelift) version is a better car but i suspect its going to be well out of your budget - there are some useful interior changes among other more major things

Yes, great cars, love them on a 19 inch 172 / Spiders which both mine had.

I would say you're down at the price point where it shouldnt depreciate much more anyway, if well kept and with civil miles.
