I’ve been looking for a bike for my daughter - she’s just about big enough for an adult mtb, albeit size S, say 15/16” frame. I’ve just spotted a home-brand type of bike which seems to fit the bill but comes with a level of kit for which I’d need to double my budget if going for a Giant, et al.

2x10 Deore drivetrain, including 315-level hydraulic brakes, and Rockshox MC30 fork with lockout. All for AU$500 new. It’s not a lightweight but the 15” frame didn’t feel substantially heavy - not in the way a lot of cheaper bikes do.

Will she appreciate the spec? Unlikely, but decent stuff is always worth having.

So, has anyone gone for the high-spec budget bike, and how did it turn out? Online reviews and info is a bit sketchy, and it’s Aus-only, but in the same vein as Carrera being Halfords own brand.

I’ve already looked for a decent secondhand bike and there are very few at this end of the budget/size spectrum, and fewer still worth looking at.

Lol she might not appreciate the decent spec, but you will when you don't have to mend it every week like you will with cheap parts that break a lot !

If you know bikes, your daughter likes it and it isn't too heavy then job jobbed!

Id feel safer with new decent brakes, wheels and tyres if I was letting my daughter out on a bike

Aside from the fork, I'd rather have a good frame with cheap components, as the components get upgraded anyway.
