I’m currently off work long term sick after a motorbike accident last year.

The TL;DR version is shattered right femur, fractured right wrist, fractured pelvis, extensive contusions/bruising, fairly hefty post operative infection, blood clots in both lungs, hospital acquired pneumonia, total non-union of femur, failed metal work in leg. I was back at work, down to one crutch and able to drive. After the plate failure I’ve had to go back almost to square one and start limb reconstruction surgery from scratch. I’ve been off work again since the beginning of March this year and won’t be back for about another two months.

I’m housebound and almost pretty much bed bound. I am bored out of my mind. I feel like I’ve watched the entirety of Netflix, YouTube, iPlayer and Prime. I’ve read the entire internet. I struggle to concentrate on reading books or magazines as I’ve not had a decent night’s sleep in almost twelve months. I’ve got at least two, possibly three more lots of surgery on my leg over the next six months or so, then another 12-18 months of recovery.

Knowing the omniscience and general altruism of PH, I’m looking for inspiration. Make some suggestions how to fill my days, ideally NOT with coke and/or hookers. Feel free to abuse me, make me laugh or just tell me to MTFU and stop being such a snowflake. I’m thoroughly cheesed off.

Over to you, random PHers.

Hope the recovery is going well although like ‘the game’, I’ve now seen your arse again in the original link and am back to feeling horrified hehe

Out of interest (if you don’t mind), was the accident in the course of your job or in your own free time?

Can’t you do like they do in the films where you go and dig out an old case file of an unsolved murder and try and crack it? hehe

Good shout, one to have a look at, even if my concentration and memory is nowhere what it usually is. Maybe the practice will do me good and help on both counts.

I’d go back to work tomorrow if I could. I was back at work full time, just doing admin stuff in the office. I’ve since moved slightly further away from the office, and I can’t drive at the moment. Public transport would be too tricky at the moment and my consultant doesn’t want me back at work until six weeks after the next “big” surgery.

I’ve actually been pushing to try and do some working from home, even if it’s only a few hours per day. Like any public sector organisation, the “Health and Safety” people are having kittens and throwing up (IMHO) all sorts of ridiculousness about why I can’t do stuff on a remote workstation/laptop. Colleagues have even offered to deliver a desk and chair from the office at home, but even that’s been kyboshed on “H&S grounds” (safer lifting and handling, insurance, employer’s liability...).

Nothing especially funny to add, but I've been in a similar situation twice now. Months off work each time with a load of metal in my wrists ankle and spine.

Chin up, you'll be reet. Try do something useful like learning Klingon, juggling knives or eating raw eggs without being sick. Your friends will be so impressed when you're back to your old self.

Hmmm... juggling knives/eating raw eggs? Ideally I want to avoid further injury/illness.

You can’t pull it off wink

Do you mind if I ask how the extended time off is treated in terms of sick pay? I have wondered how it is handled when something happens in your own time that then causes you to be on sick leave for a long time?

Six months in any 12 is full pay. Months 7-12 is half pay (it can be appealed and is reviewed on a case by case basis by a panel, chaired by the head of business services (who is the Police staff equivalent of an Assistant Chief Constable)).

I’ve got insurance through the Police Federation, which makes my pay up to about 90%. Add in the fact I’m not using any fuel or wasting money buying food at work and I’m probably no worse off.

I want to get back as soon as possible. Apart from a fortnight at the start of 2016 for some minor surgery, I’d never taken any time off sick since I joined in 1996. I just don’t “do” sick and despite my generally unhealthy/sedentary lifestyle, I’ve been lucky to not be ill.

I wasn’t being judgey - just curious!

I guess also makes you go stir crazy being stuck at home not able to work. I know it would, me.

Not taken as Judgey at all, hope my reply didn’t sound like I thought it was.

I’ve got a dog who needs exercise every day. I can’t walk him, whereas before the plate snapped, even on one crutch I could manage 2-3 km (albeit slowly on solid ground). I’m in a new flat with a small private garden so I do at least have the option to sit outside.

The downside is that sitting for any length of time quickly gets uncomfortable and makes my injured leg swell up...

First things first, sort your sleep out and you’ll be able to work on the other things like concentration etc. I’ve been in your position until recently and can assure you that even a chemically induced sleep is much better than a restless night. Have a look at mindfulness and meditation on YouTube and don’t knock it until you’ve actually tried it.
Good luck with the recovery and the future opioid withdrawals, if applicable. They don’t tell you about that when they are dosing you up with meds.

How are you at writing?

I've a mate in the same businsess as you and hes started writing funny/interesting stories not only about his life in the force but other tales from his past. He doesnt plan to publish them until he retires, but the stuff I've seen is pretty good.

Writing can be very absorbing, time consuming and rewarding.

And i hope you get back to thief taking soon. All best wishes for your recovery..
