Turning 19 which car to get
Discussion
Hey guys, I turn 19 very soon and my insurance runs out in August so I look to upgrading the 2007 1.2 corsa 😂. Currently I’m looking at the corsa VXR 2016. If anyone else has any suggestions of cars that are around 10k-13k it would be much appreciated and tbh I can be a brand snob so Audi & BMW are at the top of my list if the model can somewhat match the performance of the vxr. Other car makes are welcomed though so look forward to seeing everyone’s suggestions. If anyone has driven/owns the vxr I would love to hear their honest opinions on the car as well as I haven’t test drove any of the cars yet
Check insurance first. And then check again.
A german car with the performance of a VXR will be £££ I'm guessing, you'll prob want more than a TDi.
Buy what you like - if you can afford it, go for it. Hashtag YOLO, as your demographic are fond of saying.
(Boring answer: Keep your current car, learn to drive it more quickly/smoothly, get better age/NCB, and if you live with the folks then use the money as a deposit for your own place... I said it was the boring answer.)

Spending five figures on a car at 19 is all very well if it's really what you want to do with your money (although personally I wouldn't), but if it's going to cost you a quarter of the purchase price per year to insure it, that makes it a bit less appealing. Woodyyyy said:
Insurance on the new vxr is £1600 no black box at the moment and I expect it to go down more when I get NCB In August and fair opinion on the Audi I agree can’t get the performance I want without crazy insurance
that seams incredibly cheap for fully comp given your age and the car When I turned 19 I picked up a 1990 1.6 205 GTI for 500 quid. Great fun for a 19 year old! I didn't have much disposable income back then, this must have been in about 2003. You could pick up bargains like that all over the place though so it didn't matter. Not sure what £500-£1000 will get you these days.

I know I was surprised as well other cars like ST and gti were about £500 more and I’ve had a claim. So hopefully if the insurance drops a bit more looks like the VXR is a strong contender
So your quote of £1600 is without a black box, 1 (maybe 2?) years NCB, a claim and being 18? You must leave in an area with zero crime and risk
That being said, you can find some cheap insurance on more powerful oddball cars, didn't expect it on a VXR though - not exactly an oddball car for a young person.I insured an F56 Mini Cooper S at 19 with 3 points and no black box. Was £1600 if I remember correctly, there or thereabouts. I don't stay in a great area either.
Was considering that, a Golf GTI, Astra VXR, M140i and a TTS. The Mini worked out at the cheapest to insure of the lot (no black box) as well as being capable of remapping to 280bhp.
I'm still with the same insurer, Elephant. They'll add on a remap to the policy for an additional £100 but I haven't felt the need to make the car any faster yet.

Something with the least driving aids. Start learning how to drive.

Unfortunately light, responsive, raw and concentrated driving experience (ie something that actually improves the driver) is a distant second on the needs of most young 'car enthusiasts' to looking well cool innit and owning a car that's well better coz its new and it's got sick rimzzzzz
Give them all RUFs and TVRs I say, let natural selection take its course

If I had my time again this every single time....
Cool with everyone
Retains it's value
Cheap classic policy
Loads of space
Girls and boys love them
Nothing to prove, other than your massive cool and sex appeal!!
However - do what the rest of us do and piss money away on daft other things

Stay safe, have fun!!

Are you insuring the car with you as the main driver?

If the Corsa is your desire, I would just go for it? Do you really need four seats - perfect opportunity to find something a little more fun.
As others have intimated, driving pleasure is not necessarily buying the quickest car you can find. I would find something older, with skinny tyres and 100bhp+. Then have a go at hill climbing or something similar - far more satisfying and rewarding than a simple traffic light grand prix - especially if you are genuinely keen on driving. Otherwise, if you are purely keen on speed - a motorbike might be more appropriate......

i must be getting old. if at 19 i could muster up >15k id have bought a house/flat sooner as you can have far more fun in your own place than the back of a corsa.
likewise regardless of the vx badge i could not bring myself to spend that kind of money on such a car. if i had to spend 15k on a Vauxhall it would be a Monaro or VXR8 and you can get eithef those under budget.
why not consider an older astra vxr for 5k and put 10k to one side for now?

That’s with no ncb I had a claim first year and August will be the end of my second year & I agree a corsa VXR is definitely not an oddball
