buying CAT D car as first car
Discussion
hi
I'm a new driver (older age) and I'm looking into buy my first car.budget is limited.
I came across a Toyota Aygo 2013 with low millage of 16,000ish miles being sold by a "friend's friend",(who is a private dealer).
everty thing seems ton be alright, car looks really clean and nice, except some damage to the back lights and some small signs of paint job at back.(seems very minor)
so before even discussing it with the dealer,I checked the HPI and it says it's a CAT D insurance write off.
the full description says :
Category D. Vehicle damaged but repairable - the insurer decided not to repair
(I've been reading about categories ETC and have a general idea what this means) but I was wondering,if the damage is minor as it seems to be, should I buy this car?
the price is really good (£3500) and this a automatic which is what I'm after with very low tax and (supposedly) insurance.
will this CAT D effect the insurance premium? if so how much more should I expect?
also this car recently passed MOT and has valid MOT for 1 year.
any advice will be appreciated!

Looks like there's plenty of aygo's for around 4-4.5k on ebay.
Small bit of haggling and jobs done.
I wouldn't be buying a cat D with a dodgy paint job and still has damage as you say.
That must be top whack price for a cat D, when as I say similar non written off ones aren't much more in the grand scheme of things

Don't take this wrong way but you haven't a clue what you are talking about (you don't get 2 year mot's for starters) . Therefore there is a good chance you will get tucked up here!
Internet advice isn't much use. You need the car inspecting by somebody skilled and totally independent from the dealer.
Damaged repaired car from a driveway trader is a potential disaster waiting to happen.
Id find another £1k and buy something else from somewhere else if I were you.

I know a cat d on a runaround isn't a big problem as on a high end sports car when it comes to sell.
What % would you deduct on a Ferrari f430?
No idea about super car values but even a runaround will be half book at best if you try to sell it to the trade. What % would you deduct on a Ferrari f430?
I don’t have a problem with write offs (I own a Cat C still damaged van) but buying a badly bodged up one from a private seller innit type is a recipe for disaster
the reason I was interested in this car was because Toyota approved option of same car goes for almost twice this price.(2013 low millage)
and higher millage ones on auto trader etc that claim to have good service history are at least 1000 more for a 2008 60'000 millage..this one was 2013.
I think I'll forget this one,£3500 is a lot to risk for it I guess.
but the dealer is not a dingy person i should say, my friend who's him and sees him every day t works I thought maybe I can trust him more than a random stranger.
Honda Jazz is not for me btw.
MOT ws renewed recently according to dealer and I checked it online it was confirmed 2019? so why you guys say it's fake?

From experience of having just purchased a CatD from a dealership and finding it had no airbags in the pillars - I would avoid, Jon.
At least with me purchasing from a dealer I had consumer rights, if you find anything wrong with a private sale - you have no come back.
Unless you're clued up in this (which I am not), I'd avoid. I'll never buy a CatD again.
