What to look out for? E92 335D
Discussion
Hi! I’m on the hunt for an E92 335D - currently looking at one online that’s 300 miles away from me in London. It’s a 2010 LCI M-Sport model with 60,000 miles on the clock. We’ve already had three E46s and an E34 before - but just wondering what are the main things to look out for on one of these?
Cheers!
Cheers!
Most of the e9x foibles are well known by now, but in a nutshell;
In general, as all 335d use the 6-speed zf box, evidence of a fluid change would be nice - if not, get it done after purchase, if you plan to keep the car, it’s worth it IMO.
It shouldn’t smoke. There’s plenty of remapped 335d out there, and many DPF’s gutted too. This (DPF, never mind smoke as that’s a ‘visual’ check) will be an instant MOT fail (if noticed - there’s always ways & means, but most testers aren’t likely to risk their livelihood) after this weekend.
Check wheels for cracks on the inner edge (especially if 19”).
Nothing apart from the engine!
should rattle, all trim should be solid - if not, why?
When driving, it shouldn’t feel especially ‘boosty”, i.e. lag, lag, lag, whoosh. The small turbo runs from 1k, and the transition to the big one is done by around 2250 - so if it’s laggy, then scalded cat, it’s the small turbo, the actuators or the vacuum pipes (or multiples thereof).
On the flat, doing 40ish, put it on cruise, then reset the average mpg readout using the button on the indicator stalk - if the thermostats & everything else is good, it should be in 5th, ticking around 1100rpm, and after a minute, the mpg will be 54+ ish - if not, points to cold engine over-fuelling, etc...
Ride (if on 19”) is harsh. Avoid potholes (you’ll know why quickly if you don’t!)
Idrive is a personal thing, some like it, others not. Regardless, check everything works!
lastly, check the service history. It’s 8years old, 60k miles. Is the FSH a 20k service x3? That’s not good enough in my opinion. There’s enough of them out there that you can be choosy.
Hope that helps. I enjoyed mine for the 4 years & 80k I had it for. It’s still a fantastic looking car - better than anything BMW have done since (again IMO).
- Check the ‘hidden’ menu to get running temperature, as thermostats go.
- Stand in front of the car with the bonnet open, and look down behind the driver’s side headlight. At the bottom of the engine you should see a red hose, approx. 4” wide. Should be dry, not oily.
