Hi,

As a general commuting car I'm looking at the Golf 1.4i TSI. A lot of the cars for sale are in DSG.

Anyone own one? I'm sure I read that these engines had issues. Unsure if they are the same as the Fabia VRS ones.

Any advice is much appreciated as we are down to one car in the family and I need to replace my Panda 100HP.

Thanks

I'm not sure if it's exactly the same engine but if it's the twin-charged unit, which i believe it is, i wouldn't touch it. Too many well-known and documented issues and i just wouldn't risk it personally.

What's your budget? For both economy and performance, the 2.0 TSI is hard to beat but it would mean going for the Golf GTI.

If it's the dry clutch seven speed, it's probably worth avoiding. They don't have the best reputation and DSG repairs aren't the cheapest.

The mk6 1.4 TSI engine is known for timing chain problems. I was chatting to a Skoda tech a year or so ago who reckoned he personally changed engines under warranty that had failed as early as 35,000 miles. They also suffer from heavy oil consumption, which cannot be cured.

The later, belt cam 1.4 in the mk7 is a much better engine.

For a commuter, there have to be more reliable and better engineered places for your money.

DSG known to develop expensive problems later in its life. Regarding the engine that's twin charged, it's actually difficult to find anything positive written about it. Avoid.

The 1.4 turbo is more reliable or as suggested above the 2l TSI.

MK6 Golf GTi?
Yupp. Either that or a decent MK5. Again, depending on budget.

I think the 120 bhp variant is fine from issues? Lots of issues with the 160 though so avoid as others have said. Avoid earlier versions of the mk6 Golf GTI 210 too if you ever consider that.

Out of warranty, twin-charged engine and DSG 'box. Not a good combination...

I think a lot of the faults where fixed in the last revised engine in 2013
