Hi all, currently looking for a Boxster and have done some research and know the about the RMS and IMS etc.

I seem to remember stories of issues with the 3.2 engine over the 2.7? Despite this I can’t find much of a mention currently? Am I thinking of the 996 911?!

Any experiences? Would I be happy with a 2.7? Seem to get more for my money and it is only a meant to be a toy so outright speed isn’t everything to me in this.

I know there is a Boxster section but figured this would get a faster response, if it needs moving I am sorry.

Your feelings are correct. The 3.2 is more prone to engine issues. 2.7 is far more reliable in engine terms. Rest of the car is the same. Cmoose has a good handle on this subject if you want the specifics.

Unfortunately, all of these engines have problems, they are not trouble free. I had a 2.7 and needed engine rebuild too. They are late 90s, technology, do not expect miracles, hence the super-low price. Pretty fun cars though, If you can handle the risks go for it.

I had the same decision to make and opted for the 2.7 - very happy with my choice. I had up to £10,000 to spend and found mine at £6,000 so a little left in the pot if/when it goes tits up.
Incidentally, I preferred the 986 to the 987 which was also in the mix. The 987 has admittedly 'better' interior, but the 986's is okay and the drive is much more involving.
